Hello,

A non profit I work with has been offered hundreds of good laptops but the company wants certification of disk wiping. Like a lot of you I use dban which is great but offers no digital certificate. I suppose I can create a document that certifies we wiped the drive and what process we used, if that makes them feel better but that's really only proof that I have word processing software and a printer. So I thought I would ask other refurbishers. What do you guys do to certify you have wiped a drive?

We use eBAN which allows us to export to Excel and we provide corporate customers with a letter and spreadsheet.
As I recall you can save the DBAN wipe results to a floppy and get much the same result. Besides having to save to a floppy, as I recall you also had to create the directory on the floppy. Sorry been much too long since I seriously used DBAN or had a computer with a floppy drive.
PS: We have a corporate donor that provides us with wiped computers and they just list make, model, serial number, wiped and initialed.  I'd ask the donor what they or their auditor really needs.

Thanks Jim. Dban does create a log that will write to floppy but I haven't seen a laptop with a floppy for a long time. I guess I could buy a USB floppy.  I will check out eban. Exporting to excel sounds good.

Pat,

Good morning!  Your self created document with the type of software or method used, date/time etc will do just fine.

The company I worked with used the self reporting certification and we dealt with 3 letter Agencies.  I use the same process with my non-profit.

Best regards,

Thanks. I'll look for a template on line and start from there.

Pat,

Computers for Classrooms uses Blancco for wiping the hard drives and checking to make sure there are no bad sectors or hidden areas on the drive.  Blancco creates an html report that can be used in a court of law as proof of wipe.  The file cannot be edited without leaving a trace.

We also carry Errors and Omissions Insurance to further assure the donor that we meet or exceed their data security policy.

Any hard drive that does not wiped completely, is too small or defective is destroyed using our DeGausser.  Each donor is given a spreadsheet showing the hard drive by serial number and whether it was wiped or Degaussed including the date and technician.

There are other excellent programs out there.  If one is interested in getting “hundreds of laptops”, then you will need to meet or exceed the requirements of the donor.

I found Blancco's website but couldn't find a price which made me think it was really expensive.

All –

I would recommend talking to Mike Cheslock at DestructData. Their company makes and sells custom data destruction devices and works with all the major software companies. He is a wealth of knowledge.

Hope you are all well.

Hello all –

Funny you should mention… Over the past year we have been working with DestructData to design a dedicated VAIRIFi hard drive erasure system to meet the needs of our Refurbishing friends. VAIRIFi is PCRR’s proprietary digital data destruction software and will have no per-drive fees or large capital equipment investments.

Our goal is to make these systems as cost effective as possible, included in the monthly price is unlimited use of the hardware, hardware warranty over the life of the program term, an unlimited-use VAIRIFi software erasure license, as well as software support over the life of the program term. We expect a full release of the product in the next few weeks and will be at NAID showing it off. Let me know if you want additional information or if you have any questions.

Best,
