At the public library where I work, last week a community member asked me: "How can I make money on YouTube?"

That's a good question.  Here is an honest answer -- "It's possible to make money on YouTube, but it takes a lot of work."

YouTube will pay you money if your videos receive millions of views, but the truth is YouTube is giving you just a small slice of the advertising revenue they are collecting themselves.

However, there are two other ways to make money on YouTube. You can develop a following of people who enjoy your videos,
and they can make a monthly donation on Patreon.com -- a completely separate company from YouTube.

And YouTube now is rolling out a feature called "Applause" where there is the word "Applause" or "Thanks" under each of your
videos. People who click that can send you $2 as a way of saying thanks.  (Google keeps 1/3 of that -- sigh.)

Anyway, to have an Applause button under each of your videos, your YouTube channel needs to be a YouTube Partner. To be a YouTube
Partner requires that you have more than 1,000 subscribers to your channel and that your channel has more than 4,000 hours of video
views in the past year.

My own YouTube channel has 1,700 subscribers, so I meet that requirement.  I need to boost the number of hours of video views
to 4,000 to apply to be a YouTube Partner.

I'm proud to say that some of my most popular YouTube videos are some of my refurbishing videos -- including these two.

If you'd like to help me reach the 4,000 hours mark, stop by to visit some of my YouTube playlists at

You can run some of these playlists overnight (without sound, of course), or run a playlist during the day on a secondary
computer.  If my YouTube channel becomes a YouTube Partner, you can be sure I'll be advocating that Google take less than 1/3
for Applause donations.  Fair is fair. If I'm doing the work, you don't take 1/3 of it for yourself. That's feudal.

Hi, Phil.  We'll help ya.

We've been using GalliumOS on our donated Baytrail processor EOL chromebooks.  It works well, but is more time consuming to install than Cloudready.  We prefer Cloudready for chromebooks (and any laptop), but it doesn't support sound on Baytrail processors so we use GalliumOS.
