Well, you've got options about how to use it, really. (What we use it for is
pretty much the same as the old forum, of course.) Let's see if I can clear
things up without adding too much new confusion. Or you can stop reading now
and just read the help pages for Google Groups.
You can monitor the Google Group either by going to the web page or by
subscribing to email updates (or some combination of the two). Posting can also
be done by web or email. Your choice about what you find easiest. (I find
checking my email easier than having another website that I try to remember to
check.) Apparently you can't reply to a post more than 60 days old, so we
don't have to worry about necromancers here. :) Also, note that DD has not set
the adult content warning for this group so unless he does be a bit careful
about what gets posted here so that Google doesn't close us down.
Hopefully the web interface is straightforward enough. It works pretty
similarly to a forum. Using the group by email probably takes some explanation
if you've never used a mailing list before.
You've got some choices about how posts get mailed to you so that you can get
either each post individually or you can get them in batches or in an abridged
format. I think that getting each post individually is easiest for an
email-only approach; the other options might work better for you if you want to
go for a mix of email and web interface. Presumably you already understand the
concept of reading your email. =P
To start a new topic, send an email to refugee-a...@googlegroups.com.
The topic name is your email's subject line and the text of your email is your
post. Simple as that.
To reply to a topic, well, you reply just like any other email. Quote as much or
as little of the previous post as you like. (A line starting with a > is
quoted.) Just make sure that it's to refugee-a...@googlegroups.com. Even
if your email client shows that it's from the original poster, if your email
client isn't made of fail it should obey the headers telling it to send replies
to the group's address. So things should be easy but check the first time you
try it, just to be sure. Google also insists that you shouldn't change the
subject line. Apparently Google doesn't believe in using the In-Reply-To:
header to determine that emails with different subject lines form a thread.
If you include an attachment in your email, it will be included in your post.
Hopefully that was helpful.
