So. Not that I would ever download music illegally of course, but if
theoretically a person were going to.... what program should this person
use? >>

I used to have Limewire, but my computer got wiped and every time I try
to re-install it - any version - it keeps telling me that I have a
version running currently. Yeah, I have no idea why. I've searched my
entire comp and I have no Limewire files installed at all, but it keeps
giving me that message.

So I caved and finally tried to figure out how bit torrent works.
Downloaded that and got some mp3's. However, every time I try to open
them, Windows Media Player tells me that it doesn't support the codec
that the songs were compressed with. Danny and I tried to install some
codec packs, but it doesn't look like installing anything will fix that
problem. I'm about to wring someone's neck. How can I get some bloody
music??

Well... one may try to use a different torrent file.. This one finds that downloading the entire CD that the songs are on improves the chances they will not be phoney.. Um
Theoretically... metaphorically? Um..

Well, I theoretically downloaded a bunch of different ones, from several
theoretical sources. All of them are theoretically unplayeable. >>

That, in theory, is hardly fair. That's strange, torrent files usually work for this one... Where did you search from? 'http://thepiratebay.org' is normally a good place one could, theoretically, acquire song CDs... If one were so inclined.. >_> Looking for the files with the most seeders can also help. Uh... so I hear.

Yes, that's actually where I got most of them. I think it's a problem
with my WMP or my computer in general... I have no idea. I'm pretty sure
I have the latest version of WMP, so I have no idea why it would be
unsupported.

Hrmm... would you consider trying iTunes or VLC media player(http://www.videolan.org/vlc/)? It may be just windows media player being mean. I'm no tech expert though >< Does other ...er more legitimate music work? Not that any of your music is stolen, or anything like that.

Well, any mp3 that was downloaded when I had Limewire is fine... as well
as any files that I ripped from music CDs. I was thinking of trying a
new media player. I've used Winamp in the past, so I might give that a
try or that VLC one you linked.

Yeah, both of them tend to be more reliable than windows media player, I'm really not sure what else the problem could be... Sorry I am not of more help! I hope it works out for you

$#%&! No, Winamp won't play them either. I don't know what the hell the
problem is. I've resigned myself that I just have to re-DL them with
another program. Any ideas?

It's gotta be the torrent then... they probably uploaded some weird mp3s, maybe encrypted some how? I use uTorrent for the program, and pizzatorrent or torrentz for my torrent downloading site.

http://mp3val.sourceforge.net/  try this?  Maybe corrupted stuff leading to more corrupted stuff.

It's amazing how many people have crawled out of nowhere to talk about
something illegal.
