Asana or Jira

The company I work for is looking for a good Project Management Software for mac. Our CTO likes the functionality of Microsoft Project but he wants something that is less expensive and works well on a mac.

Anyone have any suggestions?

The only Mac desktop software I'm familiar with that produces gant chart output and that is also compatible with MS Project is Omni Plan - http://www.omnigroup.com/omniplan

Basecamp, Flow and Asana are three of the best ways I know to do simple team collaboration and task management. Jira, while good for bug tracking and agile project management, is one of the biggest piles of crap I've ever used.

Despite the above comment, I really like Jira and Confluence Wiki. Since they are web apps, there's no OS dependency. A close runner up is Agilezen, which has a slick story tracking UI.

I've used Confluence & Jira in one place and I can't say it did a good
job. Most ppl hated it actually regardless of their background.

Also used Basecamp and that was much better but was still lacking some
good features.

Currently using Asana and I'd say it gives basecamp a run for the
money. I like Asana's UI and workflow better but Basecamp did a better
job of pointing out tasks that were neglected and needed attention
IMO.

OmniPlan if you want "MS Project on a mac" - or use real Windows MS Project in a dual-boot environment.

As a replacement for MS Project the way I use it, I like these two SaaS web-based offerings:

http://teamgantt.com

http://tomsplanner.com

Disclaimer: I use gantt charts and resource leveling when creating or modifying a project plan - but I do not use them to MANAGE the project or deliverables/deadlines on a day-to-day basis. For that project communication/collaboration portal function, we use Basecamp Classic. Had also recently looked into ApolloHQ as a replacement, but it didn't take - we're grooved in too deeply with Basecamp.

Steve,

What does your CTO like about MS Project? And what other project management goals do y'all have? There are a lot of different styles out there from "collaboration" style mgmt (Asana, Basecamp), to reporting and workflow based ones (Jira, etc). I've always found Project to be in class of its own.

We use ProWorkFlo version 8

Here's an article I found comparing quite a few project management platforms:

Well then it seems like Omni Plan is the best fit then. Good luck!

We currently have JIRA as our task manager, and bug tracker. However, JIRA does not provide the kind of project planning and management functionality that we need. We need to be able to organize our projects, track their progress, and see on a calendar when they are due.

Thanks for your help!

If you like shared Gantt chart functionality, check out TeamGantt
