Ok gang.

If you haven't seen this, check out out. I'm not going to re-type the
awesome message that the videos show.

A few more videos here:

When: 12/12/09 saturday

Basically all photographers help share some joy, and hope with others
less fortunate. It's not about posting photos of them in your book,
it's about caring.

There is an Arizona group on ning:
http://community.help-portrait.com/group/arizonaphotographers

I'm planning on going to the planning meeting next week and will share
how you can help as I'm sure we're going to need some local direction.

Let's make it happen

Okay, I'm in too Adam!

When and where is the planning meeting?

If it would help, I could donate a studio for the day as well...

Doesn't anyone find this project, while well-intentioned, quite misguided and self-serving?  I mean, who are we as photographers to decide who needs help?

Interesting thoughts Damien,

Could you elaborate on which part(s) make it self serving, or are you caught on on the "help" name.

Do discus!

It's not just the name, the project doesn't take into account the needs or wants or whims of anyone but the photographers.  It would be different if it was a national call to photographers to help victims of domestic violence find a sense of togetherness through photographs, but to me it just seems like a project created by those of privilege under the disguise of charity.  It is the power dynamic which is the source of my discomfort, that we as photographers, as those who have the resources to pursue photography, decide that certain people are in need, and not only that, in need of quality photography.  My guess is if you asked people at shelters and such of things that they need, decent photographs wouldn't be there.  Which leads me to wonder why participating in a project like this would yield anything more than a novelty for those being photographed.

And why, if these people are genuinely in need of help and would welcome it, would we take photographs of them, just because we're good at it?  That isn't solidarity.

That is a very interesting  point of view.

I am far to tired tonight to really share my thoughts properly. But I do know how cherished a family portrait can be.

I guess I am curious how the families that are 'in need' are identified.

It seems to encourage doing something for the people who seem to be in
need. It doesn't restrict to a certain kind of need. If it's a ride
they need, give 'em a ride in addition to taking/giving the photo.

Nothing wrong with encouraging people to do good things, and the
gimmick is just there to help get the word out.

You can choose to do nothing good for anyone if you prefer. ;-)

Thanks,
- Brian

Either way, however they might be chosen, I'd love to help out in anyway I can.  I've signed up at the Ning site and will try and get some more info there.

Thanks for posting this!
