Google to Become More Expensive than Network Television?
Could advertising on Google become more expensive than advertising on
network TV? MarketerToday has the latest report on this prediction.

Google: World's Biggest Media Company
As it hit a historical high of just pennies beneath $300 Tuesday, GOOG
stock made Google the world's biggest media company as measured by
financial valuation: 80-billion dollars. (Time Warner is valued at
about 78-billion, on sales of 42-billion. Google reports sales of
3.2-billion.) The stock ratcheted down by about 20 dollars after that,
but there's no question those elevated forecasts have given GOOG a
boost.
http://google.weblogsinc.com/entry/1234000650046039/

Google Tops Time Warner as #1 Media Company
If I were the RoadRunner I'd be pretty upset right about now. Google's
got so much cash they're making Time Warner look pretty pale in
comparison.
Reports on Wall Street now confirm that Google is "the most valuable
media company on the planet" with a market capitalization of $80.8
billion that surpasses Time Warner's $79.8 billion.
Of course, market caps are extremely fluid and any nudge either way
(Google down, Time Warner up, etc.) could cause Google to become the
second biggest once again. That said, Google's stock performance has
been nothing less than amazing as of late. The stock price has gone up
by a third in the last 4 weeks alone, trading at 3 1/2 times its August
IPO price of $85.
This paradigm shift is especially interesting considering Time Warner's
merger with AOL, once considered the Internet behemoth to beat. Looks
like those days are over.

Anatomy Of An Internet Search Engine
For some unfortunate souls SEO is simply the learning of tricks and
techniques that, according to their understanding, should propel their
site into the top rankings on the major search engines. This
understanding of the way SEO works can be effective for a time however
it contains one basic flaw ... the rules change. Search engines are in
a constant state of evolution in order to keep up with the SEO's in
much the same way that Norton, McAfee, AVG or any of the other
anti-virus software companies are constantly trying to keep up with the
virus writers.

Why Europe needs research spending
(9 June 2005) On 6 April 2005 the European Commission made a proposal
for a spending programme for research and development from 2007 to
2013. This programme, in line with the Commission's proposal on the
overall budget for this period, envisages a doubling of EU funds for
research and development. This reflects the EU's political priority for
growth and jobs. The Commission's proposal is backed up by an impact
assessment study which examines the link between research investment
and increased competitiveness. The present background note highlights
some of the findings of the impact assessment. It identifies the strong
and positive impact that research and development in general, and the
European Framework Programme in particular, has on the European
economy. It describes the added value of working together at European
level and the effect on job creation within the EU.

OBJECTIFS DU MILLÉNAIRE POUR LE DÉVELOPPEMENT : PROGRÈS SANS

NATIONS UNIES
New York, Jun 9 2005 12:00PM
pourrait soigner facilement, soit 11 millions par an.

Google's Push Into 3D Local Mapping
Google is reportedly testing laser and photographic equipment that
could create 3D grids of urban streets and buildings. Starting with San
Francisco, Google plans to make 3D photo-maps of many cities around the
world John Battelle doesn't understand why, but if this is true the
competitive reasoning would be obvious. Google enjoys a competitive
advantage in local search thanks to its one-two-three punch of Local,
Maps, and Earth. But the atmosphere is intense, with Yahoo! developing
at a furious clip and Amazon's A9 already offering storefront photos
of entire cities in its Yellow Pages area. Microsoft has unveiled
45-degree-angled satellite imagery in MSN Earth, arguably stealing some
of Google Earth's relatively flat thunder. Google is in the rat race,
and there's no stopping now. Besides, 3D street imagery connected to
local search listing and driving directions could actually be useful.
While Maps offers excellent clarity and detail, and Earth provides
realism with less detail, a 3D image taken at street level could bridge
them together.

Probing the Deep, Invisible Web
As most of us who are in search know, the web's repository of knowledge
is vastly larger than what is accessible to the major commercial search
engines. Hundreds of thousands of databases cannot be probed and their
documents remain invisible to all but th specialized search tools used
to dig them out.
Fortunately, several projects, including one pointed to by Xan Porter
(called Qprober - PDF warning) use automatic text extraction followed
by intelligent, trained querying of a system to extract as many of the
available documents as possible. In the future, this type of
intelligent access will provide a gateway for access to much of what is
currently 'invisible'.
Today, for example, I used another resource Xan pointed out, called
Complete Planet to find an art project that was hidden in the database
of the Library of Fine Arts in Dresden, Germany. The search revealed an
installation artist's work - Günther Hornig - who has a great eye
for the whimsical.

1,217 searches for the secondary terms brought users to the site.
Almost every single secondary keyword phrase that I targeted brought at

3 Tips for Great Web Content
I was talking to a Web person the other day about copy. I asked if his
site incorporated important keywords in the copy and linked those
keywords to relevant pages, these being tactics that benefit both
conversion and search engine rankings. "Um, no," he replied. "Our
SEO guy is on top of things. And we've totally revamped our
navigation system. We want to avoid the cheesy look." To which I
replied, "You do want to sell, right?"

Debt relief initiative welcomed

NGO's and leaders from Africa have welcomed the new debt relief
initiative from US President George W. Bush and British Prime
Minister Tony Blair. Jacques Diouf, Director-General of the Food and
Agricultural Organisation, said debt relief was vital for economic
development in Africa. The World Bank plans to increase its efforts
to help poverty-stricken countries on the continent to achieve
similar growth rates to the best-performing states. Bush and Blair
said they are close to an agreement on providing debt relief for
Africa's poorest countries. Eliminating poverty in Africa is to top
the agenda next month at the G8 summit of industrialised nations.

Obscure Link Techniques
I've been thinking lately about some of the more obscure tactics that
can be used to generate links. These generally include most of the
following broad categories:
* Humor
* Conflict
* The Bizzare
* Secret Information
* The Nefarious
* Fun
Examples of these techniques include the recent SEO Quiz, Henk Van Ess'
SearchBistro, the SEO-via-Voodoo site and others. The questions that
keep me interested are:
1. Are these tactics effective over the long run?
2. Do they generate the right kind of traffic?
3. Are they equally applicable to multiple industries?
4. Can there be overkill with these practices?
I'll be wandering around the forums and the web looking for answers

[TheWriteArticles] For Both Search Engines And Real Estate, Location Is
Everything
For Both Search Engines And Real Estate, Location Is Everything

By Kirk Bannerman

It's all about location, location, location!

In the past...back in the days when Google was IT when it came to
natural search results...everyone was very focused (or shall we
say obsessed?) on Google page rank.

Now that Google is a public company and the search business has
become competitive (most notably due to the serious search
capabilities now being offered by Yahoo and Microsoft, via MSN),
Google has become much more "private" or secretive about things
like page rank, backlinks, etc.

As a matter of fact, many are of the opinion that Google is now
intentionally displaying outdated page rank and backlink
information on the Google Toolbar in an effort to mask the true
workings of Google and to frustrate the Search Engine
Optimization (SEO) community, which had become fairly skillful at
"playing the Google game". If this is the case, then Google page
rank fixation is now pure folly.

Another factor that is closely watched by webmasters is the Alexa
traffic rank. This traffic rank is based on three months of
aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar
users.

However, the Alexa user base is only a sample of the Internet
population, and sites with relatively low traffic will not be
accurately ranked by Alexa due to the statistical limitations of
the sample.

Alexa's data come from a large sample of several million Alexa
Toolbar users; however, this is not large enough to accurately
determine the rankings of sites with fewer than roughly 1,000
total monthly visitors.

Generally speaking, traffic rankings of over 100,000 should be
regarded as not reliable because the amount of data that Alexa
has available is not statistically significant.

Who said the emperor is wearing no clothes?

With the questionable current accuracy of two of the hallowed
benchmarks of search popularity, where does that leave us? It
leaves us exactly where we should have been in the first place,
not obsessing over Google Page Rank or Alexa Traffic Rank, but
instead focusing on the most important thing of all...and that
is, what is your position in the listings when a person searches
for your key words.

Remember, that for both search engines and real estate, it's all
about location, location, location!
