Hey guys,
Today is the start of our first event - mabrouk!
I saw the calligraphy pieces for the first time yesterday (as a result of hilarious communication attempts with the artist!). Some of them are beautiful, some are not what I expected but also nice, some are stunningly kitch! He's done a remarkable survey of aesthetic trends in the middle east. I'm still hoping for some more information about the pieces as he's quoted from poetry and used very different calligraphic styles which is would be nice to note down for the interested viewer, but in any case it's nice.
If I had seen the pieces before, I may have been able to avoid using the terribly uninspiring title 'arabic calligraphy exhibit'. I translated a line from one of the pieces: 'The Pen and What it Underlines' which I think would be a catchier title. I know it's a shame to change the title from the brochures etc, but Dan d'you think you could change that online? Perhaps: 'The Pen and What it Underlines: Arabic Calligraphy Exhibition at the Scottish Poetry Library'. Feel free to nab any of the info on the blurb (attached) for the website too.
I'll upload pics onto fb now and let's start making some noise. Reel Iraq is (kind of) here!
