Hello Everyone,

I would like to have opinions, suggestions and changes you may have about this forum site I put together.
It's still not complete and no sections were created yet, but it's enough for you to get the picture.

Thank you,
Roberto.

Looks great, Roberto.

Everything seems work correctly, and I can't think of anything off hand that should be changed.
Any idea on what categories/subcategories you will be adding to start with?

Ok, so now I'm having some issues with my hosting provider.
The PHP application crashes and causes the page not to display.
If you refresh the page, it works again until it decides to crash again.
Strange part is that tomorrow, everything will be fine and no errors are generated.
They say I'm using too much resources. Just bogus or for real? I'm the only person on the forum and I'm using too much resource? I can't even imagine what it would be like if it was 1000s.
Just wanted to vent.
I'm gonna work on another hosting, I guess.

Roberto.

I highly doubt you are using too much resources by yourself. My guess
is they have an issue with the configuration on their end. Sometimes
those smaller scale hosting choices don't allocate enough resources
for the hosting unless you get your own dedicated server, etc. It's
really noticeable with the shared hosting stuff.
Gotta love having somebody else control the servers. haha.

Vent away....I'm sure the rest of us don't care. :)

Looks nice to me.

A lot will depend on the topics/categories you pick.
And it would be great if the current threads can somehow be ported.
Probably hard though.

But your downfall could be cheap shared hosting.
No idea who your provider is, but most of them completely overload the
servers with too
many clients in order to save cost. Then just advertise "bandwidth",
which is not what really matters.
Unfortunately, a dedicated server is expensive.
Hope it works out, but make sure you test it a lot first, because a
buggy-overloaded-crashing
forum could in fact be worse than google groups.

Seems to be working well for me. What's the hold up on moving over?

It's stable for now, but it will eventually start crashing one of these days. Usually if I don't mention anything, it's fixed when I look the next day.
I'm gonna try different hosting.

Hello Everyone,

I got the forum installed in another server.
Membership wasn't transferred, so whoever signed up on old one has to sign up again.
The new forum site is: http://forum.reefangel.com/
Please take a look and let me know what you think.
I'd like people to start posting and testing so we can see if this server is going to be ok before I make it official.

Thank you for your help,
Roberto Imai.

I will say that I like the topic breakdown / groupings. They seem to
be appropriate and looks like it covers almost all of the posts I've
seen come through the email group (from what I recall anyways).

I'm just waiting for my account to be "approved" before I can start
testing it out. hahahaha ;-)

Would it suck up too much bandwidth if there were a "Member's
Aquariums" section where folks can post pictures or talk about their
setups? I always enjoy browsing those every so often on Reef
Central. I'd love to see how folks are automating their tank with the
RA.

Also, I think there should be a "New Members" section to get folks
started. I know they could go to one of these other sections, but if
there's a "New Members" or "Getting Started" section, that's where
people would easily turn to first.

And when do I get to sign up??

I still have to tune it to work for us.
I also don't like the way it doesn't post your stuff until it's moderated.

Ok, I think the standard phpbb lacks some stuff that I think would be really good to have.
The first one is the subscription logic forces the email notifications to stop until you actually visit the forums.
So, I was looking at mods and found this one:
http://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/mod/board_watch/
It gives the user more flexible ways of getting notifications.
Also, it lacks a digest feature for those that want to know what is going on, but don't want the emails to be coming all day long.
I found this one:
http://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/mod/phpbb_digests/
So, before I start hacking on the forum, I'd like to know what you have to say and if you have some experience with phpbb, there may be other ways of doing this without hacking and modding it.

Roberto.

I have modified the forum with the boardwatch mod.
If you would like to receive all posts in the forum, you have to change the preference in your user control panel.
The default setting is not to send any email.
http://forum.reefangel.com/ucp.php?i=boardwatch&mode=boardwatch
You still have the option to subscribe to specific forum/topics in the original way, which would only send you one email until you visit the forum again.
I'm still working on the digest email option.
On another note, I'd like to ask if someone can think of any down side of turning the emails into HTML version, instead of plain text emails.
Let me know what you think of HTML emails, as this is something that I think would be really nice to have.
Roberto.

Nice looking forum Roberto!

Only problem I see with it right now is that we don't have enough
people on! I feel like I am talking to myself!
