to Redrawing the Maps
Dear all,

Hope everyone's well, and looking forward to seeing some of you
tonight at the Carpenter's. Below are some notes Ben took from the
last meet-up. As the first point says, I think a book group/essay
discussion thing would be fantastic - Hannah suggested that we talk
about a section of Ways of Seeing (I can repost if the lines have got
crossed), maybe that'd be best to start with as it's probably the one
people are most likely to know...

But I also don't know anything about book club protocol either - maybe
we can see what everyone's up for in discussion tonight!

All best,

Tom

----------

Start a regular book share between participants of Berger's work -
Leading into a reading group focused on specific works - the aim of
which should be to highlight specific threads of thoughts that can be
drawn into the discussions seamlessly.

Begin an Out Reach of sorts now to local groups within the surrounding
community of Limehouse Town Hall - with a particular focus on
understanding how the narrative imposed by the Olympics is effecting
communities directly. In keeping with the notion of Redrawing the
Maps, the question was raised; How will the legacy of the Olympics
effect the popularly accepted narrative of the area and what will have
been lost?

Off the back of this it was suggested that an interesting exercise
might be a tour of the surrounding area with a focus on what was
destroyed and dramatically reconfigured during the run up and time of
the Olympics. Adelita who attended this week, is already doing a
substantial amount of work looking at a housing Co-Op that was evicted
and subsequently demolished.

My friend Felix has also alerted me to something similar that is
already happening in regard to tours:
CARP Gentrification Tour, Saturday 24th March, starting at 3pm outside
Stratford Station

Gentrification Tour Itinerary:
• 3pm Meet outside Stratford Station
• 3.05pm Discuss Westfield and Surrounding Landmarks
• 3.30pm Foot Bridge Leading to Carpenters Estate and discuss
surroundings
• 3.40pm Discuss the Building Crafts Centre and Dennison Point.
• 3.50pm Discuss the docklands settlements
• 4.10pm Walk through estate to canal water ways
• 5.00pm Carpenters Arms to pursue campaign stalls and converse with
other Newham Campaigners, also where two groups will ascend Lund point
at 15 minute intervals.
• 5.45pm Roster of Speakers
• 6.30pm Film Screening ‘on the edge’

Matt Drage who attended briefly last week and runs Copenhagen Place (a
non-commercial arts space round the corner from the town hall) has
suggested we use the space for possible satellite events and
potentially an exhibition of sorts, it's early days but some of us are
going to visit both Limehouse Townhall and Copenhagen Place on April
the 4th around 1pm. Anyone else who is interested in seeing the spaces
please feel free to join!

Cristina who was involved in the Really Free School suggested now
would be a good time to draw on what was learnt during the project, so
we're going to set up an anonymous debrief document in which to
discuss the successes, failings and lessons learnt with the internal
RFS mailing list. Since over a year has past it's hoped we can gather
a good spectrum of insights into the running of the project that can
in turn feedback to this one! We'll keep you posted :)

Hi all,

I'm bringing Ways of Seeing tonight in case anyone specifically wants to discuss the essay I mentioned... But also bringing some other Berger writings that relate to mapping and landscapes... So perhaps as Tom suggests we can have a chat about what a reading group might consist of and what threads of thought it might highlight.
