I recently installed windows 7. As a part of this, I was required to install the drivers for my onboard wireless adapter (Realtek 8187). However, with the driver came this annoying management studio called Realtek Wireless Lan Utility. It's not a huge burden, except that every time I log in to my computer (if I've been idle for a while), this idiot application is up on the screen and I need to click 'close' to close it.
I can't seem to find any 'do not start at windows startup' on the application or anything that would cause it to just let windows manage my wireless settings. I've done the preliminary google search, but searches for 'disable realtek wireless lan utility' seem to come up with nada for results. Anyone know how to disable this stupid program?

So, hopefully this might help someone in the future, but I was able to find the solution. In the Program Files directory, there is a Realtek Wireless Lan Utility and Driver folder. Within this folder is a driver/ folder. I copied this folder to another location, uninstalled the realtek wireless lan utility (which also uninstalled the driver). I then went into Device Manager, searched for new hardware (which it found the wireless adapter, but required a driver). I pointed the driver installation system to the driver/ folder, and it installed JUST the driver.
RealTek Wireless Lan Utility-It's listed as a service - you can close the utiltiy by right clicking on the icon on the tray and choosing QUIT - if you want to stop it from running - open services - find 'Realtek87b' open it by double clicking on it - stop it - then disable it - then forget about it. The utility will not run when you restart and will be removed the next time you update or remove the driver. It is a small utility that shows what other ReaTek wireless users are on your lan. that's all nothing insidious - just a driver writer's utility that might be of use to an organization. It allows wireless users on the same lan to discover and quickly communicate with each other - the same way that windows lan users used to do with the lan utility that used to be bundled in all lan drivers.
Power off, unplug the Alfa from USB and restart. The Alfa utility should not appear. Plug in the Alfa when needed or turn it on if it is an onboard device and connect to network as usual. This will just use the normal Windows interface.
First you should look if the utility maybe has some preferences like load on startup or use windows utility or something like that. Maybe the programm is showed at systemsettings; programms and functions. If so, you can uninstall it like every other programm.

In this post, you will learn what Realtek USB wireless LAN utility is, how to download or update Realtek wireless LAN driver, and some troubleshooting tips for Realtek WiFi adapter driver issues. For Windows users, you can find some useful utilities from MiniTool Software, e.g. MiniTool Power Data Recovery, MiniTool Partition Wizard, etc.
Realtek USB wireless LAN utility is a WiFi adapter tool designed by Realtek. Realtek wireless LAN driver is the software package for Realtek USB WiFi devices. It is needed for the Realtek wireless device to work properly on your PC and lets your PC communicate with the Realtek WiFi hardware device.
If you have problem with using Realtek USB wireless LAN utility or the Realtek wireless LAN driver has issues on your Windows 10 computer, you can check the troubleshooting tips below to fix the problem.
Fix 3. Update your Windows OS to the latest version to install all available new versions of drivers. Click Start -> Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Update, click Check for updates button to update Windows 10.
MiniTool Power Data Recovery helps you recover any deleted or lost files, photos, etc. from Windows computer, USB flash drive, memory card, external hard drive, SSD, etc. The simple interface and operation let you recover data in a few clicks.
MiniTool Partition Wizard is a top free disk partition manager. You can use this tool to easily manage your hard drive partitions by yourself. For instance, create, delete, extend, resize, format, wipe, and convert partitions; check and fix disk errors; migrate OS, etc.
Mainly HP laptops with Realtek wireless network adapters, try to connect to the company network (we have 2 one for setup of a software that helps connect to the main network and means that the user should have no issues connecting after a password change as it should auto update the password. Both of these networks fail to connect
Here is the really strange thing, we probably have around 4000 users that use their laptops/phones etc on WiFi but around 1-2% cannot connect their laptops to the WiFi due to this issue, when you try to connect and during the connection process it disables the network adapter and brings it back online and then states it cannot connect to this network.
it is mostly apparent on Windows 10 Update 1803 but also been experiencing it on windows 8.1. However, we have had some laptops with exactly the same specs and hardware and OS versions that connects fine
Disabling and re-enabling the network adapter, in network settings in control panel, uninstalling the network adapter and reinstalling it in device manager, updating drivers, rolling back to previous versions of drivers, checking for any outstanding windows updates using an ethernet connection.
I am having the same issue with hp laptops. Wifi gets disabled, print spooler stops and audio is disabled. I have updated the bios, firmware and drivers but to no effect. 1803 is playing ball with these hp laptops
The WiFi infrastructure is massive as it is spread about the whole campus, however, the number of people affected is low in comparison to the number of users probably around 1% (not including staff which devices are all bought in large quantities at once.
Thanks for this I will try it tomorrow when back in work we are currently trying to get a spreadsheet together with information on MAC addresses and hardware names as well as driver version and as per Toxic_Potato suggestion, we will also start checking firmware versions as well.
If you have a Live Linux Distro on a USB stick then you could try one of the affected laptops with that. If the fault disappears then you know it is a Windows issue only and if it is still there then maybe a hardware issue such as switch antenna connections. Any Linux Distro will do for the test - preferably a lightweight one so that it responds better seeing as it will be working from the USB stick. It is always good to have a Live Linux Distro in your toolbox for situations such as these.
I will try and see if I can get a device that has the original image available. But I guess the chances of that are slim. Maybe I will get someone that is able to leave a laptop with me to backup and install from an iso but usually these students need their laptops for classes.
Thanks, the 8188 CUS version did resolve my issues as well. To Ash... to use the "wireless Network Utility" in your applications folder to setup the USB wifi device. After you do this, you can see the USB wifi in the network preference pane.
Thank you very much for your help! I dropped my laptop and managed to rip out the wireless adapter yesterday. I bought the Netgear WNA1000M today without reading the specifications... I managed to get it working for Lion OSX 10.7.5 following your instructions! Very straight forward. Downloaded the Realtek installation package, ran it, restarted the computer then opened the Wireless Network Utility to connect.
Hi Tim,
I have installed the driver you said. I can see the WLAN adaptor in my networks (inside system preferences), but how do I actually use it?
You say "Remember: the driver doesn't integrate into Apple's airport utility. So you'll have to run a separate client to set up the wireless network. It isn't pretty. But it works."
Can you tell me which client, where to get it for Mountain Lion.
Many thanks,
Diesel
