I have downloaded linux-2.6.6.tar.gz (kernel) and linux-abi-2.6.6.diff.bz2
(ABI patch).
I have recomplied kernels before, but never upgraded and applied patches. I
am a bit (let's say very) confused about the exact steps to follow in
upgrading the kernel to 2.6.6 and applying the patch. Can anyone tell me
exactly where to put the files and what commands to issue in what sequence?
Any help would be much appreciated.

You don't do yourself a favour by using the 2.6.6 kernel! It has problems.
Better apply the patch - if it really needed - to the current FC2 kernel.

Then adjust the patch to fit for the current Fedora kernel.
