Three Assistant Professorships in Sociology (one of which might be appointable as Associate Professor)
Assistant Professor: Salary is competitive and not less than £50,387 per annum inclusive
Associate Professor: Salary is competitive and not less than £60,080 per annum inclusive
The Department of Sociology at the LSE welcomes applications for three Assistant Professor
appointments. This will be an open call for outstanding candidates in any area of sociology, though
candidates who can teach in the following areas which have been identified as central to the strategic
development of the Department are especially welcome: political sociology, stratification and inequality
(including class, gender, and/or race/ethnicity), and economic sociology. At least one of the
appointments is expected to have demonstrable strengths in quantitative methods. Whilst it is our
preference to appoint at Assistant Professor level, it is possible that one appointment might be made
at Associate Professor level.
The successful candidate should be committed to excellence in teaching on undergraduate and
masters’ courses and research supervision. They will be expected to play an active role in the
administration of the Department.
Candidates will have a completed PhD in Sociology or related field (or nearly completed at Assistant
Professor level). Candidates at either level will be expected to have a publication record which is
internationally excellent in terms of originality, rigour and significance. Additionally, candidates at
Associate Professor level will have published at least four outputs (books or journal articles) since
January 2008 that are internationally excellent in terms of originality, rigour and significance; at least
two of which must be world leading.
Candidates at either level should have relevant teaching and supervision experience at undergraduate
and ideally postgraduate levels.
Associate Professor candidates will also be expected to have extensive experience of academic
management and have a significant international reputation for research and scholarship.
The other criteria that will be used when shortlisting for this post can be found on the person
