Call for Participation: NordiCHI'18 Workshop on 'Thinking Outside the (Tool)Box: Empowering People with Toolkits'
This full-day workshop will be held on Sunday, 30 September 2018, as part of the NordiCHI 2018 conference in Oslo, Norway. We aim to bring together researchers, designers, and practitioners, all with an interest in DIY/making toolkits and how they are used in a variety of contexts with people from diverse backgrounds for different purposes.
Workshop theme
Recent trends within the HCI community have called for designing digital technologies that empower users. Several toolkits have been designed and introduced to broad groups of people, promoting DIY-making of interactive artefacts. The HCI community often highlights the technical novelty of toolkits and their creative potential to create new artefacts. However, these are not the only factors for a toolkit to be successful in a community.
The overarching goals of this one-day workshop day are to:
(1) identify different ways in which toolkits can empower people, and
(2) establish new connections between those developing toolkits or using toolkits as research tools.
The full-day session will, therefore, offer a space for researchers, designers, and practitioners to share their insights and interests in designing and using DIY/making toolkits in different communities. We encourage participants to discuss their own experiences of practices that lead to success (or failure) in using and sustaining toolkits in different communities. Furthermore, we will collectively reflect on the key challenges for designing and using toolkits to engage people in technology design.
Submission
Interested candidates are invited to share their insights and discuss previous experiences in form of a two-fold submission that includes:
(1) a position paper of up to six pages (incl. references) in CHI Extended Abstract format, and
(2) a poster design complementing the paper.
The submissions should highlight the toolkits used, the application contexts in which toolkits were used, their target communities, and some reflections on success and/or failure of using the toolkits.
The position papers and posters (in PDF only) should be submitted via email to p.jarusr...@gmail.com They will be reviewed based on their relevance to the workshop theme and potential for contributing to discussions on using HCI toolkits to empower people.

- Notification: 17th August 2018
- Workshop Day: 30th September 2018
Please note that we require at least one author of each accepted position paper to attend the workshop and that all participants must register for both workshop and at least one day of the conference.
