We are proud to announce that the first edition of the controversy studies summer school series will take place in Paris from the 27th to the 29th of August 2014. Controversies are both empirical phenomena, methodological challenges, and political fields of interventions: we will use their multifaceted nature to explore how they force us to recast pedagogy.
The school is tailored to early career researchers and university teachers who are interested in using controversies as new vectors of pedagogical intervention. The school is sponsored by the FORRCAST project and organized in collaboration with the médialab at SciencesPo.
About the summer school
This year the summer school will ask the question of what constitutes a ‘good’ controversy? This is interesting both because there are many potential ‘goods’ associated with controversies – they are for example claimed to be good for democratic deliberation (or quite the opposite), good for learning (or quite the opposite), or good places to study the social in its making – and because some controversies seem to be better suited for certain purposes than others – some are particularly good for teaching students how science, technology and expertise become contested in democratic processes, some are better than others as arenas of public engagement, and some can be studied with certain tools and methods while others cannot. As a summer school participant you will work practically on these questions together with our invited speakers and the médialab team.
Preliminary program
FORCCAST develops a series of state of the art tools for mapping, analyzing and visualizing controversies. As a summer school participant you will be introduced to this toolbox and the ways in which mapping tools can be used to teach controversies. You will have the opportunity to work on improving your teaching plans, your case studies, your scenarios of use and your conceptual illustrations. You will also have the opportunity to engage with a range of invited speakers with practical and theoretical expertise in controversy studies. They will help us put the tools into context and challenge us on their possible applications. The current list of speakers include:

How to apply
Participation is free. Please send your application containing your name, academic affiliiation, and motivation for participating in the school (max 2 pages) to ander...@sciencespo.fr or vincent...@sciencespo.fr before June 1st 2014. Space is limited and we will select participants based on the letter of motivation. A final program will be available by the end of May and you will be notified on the confirmation of your participation by June 10th.
