"Swissnex in Brazil, the Swiss Leading House Latin America (University of St. Gallen) and the Brazilian National Council for State Funding Agencies (CONFAP), are pleased to announce the third edition of the Swiss-Brazilian sustainable innovation program for the bioeconomy (nexBio Amazonia).

The nexBio Amazonia bilateral program aims to initiate sustainable innovation projects in the Amazon region. It shall act as a platform and catalyst for new international
partnerships between Switzerland and Brazil to develop and implement projects and solutions contributing to a sustainable, inclusive, and efficient bioeconomy. In response to the immediate threats of climate change and the loss of biodiversity, the main goal of this call is to jointly develop and implement innovative solutions with a positive impact on the socio-bioeconomy in the Amazon region.

The focus of the nexBio Amazonia program is to solve specific problems endemic to the
region that were carefully defined through the consultation of local stakeholders and existing research. The program aims to provide the participants with connections,
knowledge, and the required skills to navigate the ecosystem of the Amazon region.

Eligibility
1. Eligible applicants are:
a) startups:
• that develop ready-to-market solutions such as products, technology-based services, or methods with strong market potential to drive sustainable transformation in Amazonian production chains;
• whose solutions embrace a bioeconomy perspective, using biological resources like plants, microorganisms, agricultural waste, and biodiversity to generate food, energy, materials, and knowledge in ways aligned with natural cycles;
• that strengthen sustainable production models that already rely on renewable resources and have lower environmental impact;
b) researchers:
• into technologies, methods, and products that can drive meaningful and lasting change for local industries and ecosystems, while recognizing traditional knowledge and local production systems;
• aligned with sociobioeconomics and contributing to meaningful and sustainable impact in the local ecosystem, engaging with areas such as biodiversity, food systems, climate change, social sciences, and the economy, among others.
2. Relevant areas include, but are not limited to, biotechnology, agriculture, green chemistry, finance, and social innovation.
3. Only participants from states where the State Funding Agency – FAP - is a participant in the agreement to fund this program will be accepted.
4. Only fully-filled proposals meeting all eligibility criteria will be considered for further evaluation.
5. For all Brazilian candidates, either startups and researchers, the participating FAPs are responsible to carry out an eligibility check before the online interview.
6. Only candidates deemed eligible by the FAPs will be invited to an interview.

The nexBio Amazonia will happen between 3 to 14 August, 2026.

Applications shall be submitted in electronic format only through the online application form by midnight GMT-3 (Brazilian time) on Sunday, May 3, 2026."
