"The International Climate Initiative (IKI) provides a comprehensive portfolio of funding opportunities designed to support global climate action and biodiversity conservation. 

Its funding philosophy is built on a mix of competitive and non-competitive selection processes, ensuring both innovation and strategic alignment with national and international priorities.

Funding Philosophy

IKI applies a tiered funding approach, using several competitive selection procedures—Large Grants, Medium Grants and Small Grants—as the primary mechanism for selecting high-quality projects. These competitive calls attract a wide range of experienced implementing organisations capable of contributing to climate mitigation, adaptation and biodiversity conservation in partner countries.

In addition to competitive processes, IKI also adopts non-competitive mechanisms for targeted project development. These include contributions to multilateral initiatives, resource mobilisation efforts and the establishment of IKI interface offices in priority countries. 

All funding instruments operate within the strategic framework established by the IKI Strategy 2030, effective from 2024 onwards, which defines the thematic priorities and selection principles guiding the programme.
