"To ensure that local audiences have access to trusted, timely and accurate information on the current critical state of biodiversity, Internews’ Earth Journalism Network’s (EJN) Biodiversity Media Initiative is offering story grants to increase the quality and quantity of biodiversity coverage, and to highlight the overwhelming threats to our natural world as well as promising or proven solutions.
Eligibility
1. Applicants:
a) are journalists working in any medium (online, print, television, radio) or other expert media practitioners with professional reporting experience;
b) are from countries classified as low- or middle-income (which includes upper-middle income countries) by the World Bank;
c) are required to provide a signed letter of support from their editor, explicitly stating that the media outlet will publish the stories produced as a result of this grant;
d) need to submit two samples of stories or links to relevant work.
2. Ambitious in-depth stories that make use of innovative multimedia, collaborative, cross-border or investigative approaches to expand the breadth and depth of coverage of biodiversity and conservation issues.
3. Stories can be produced in any language. However, applicants who intend to write or produce stories in their local language need to also include an English translation.
4. Application must be:
a) made in the name of one lead applican;
b) in English.
5. Grants with an average budget of 1,000-2,000 EUR each.
We welcome applications from early-career journalists and experienced reporters with a track record of covering biodiversity issues. We encourage applications from freelance reporters and staff from all types of media organizations—international, national, local and community-based.
In addition to funding, selected journalists will receive support from experienced mentors throughout their project.
