April: Wake Up!

As we progress into spring all that surrounds us in nature reminds us of new beginnings.  It is a time that you may feel inclined towards change in your own life.  You may notice the urge to de-clutter your home or work space, you may be thinking of new projects to begin, or you may notice the desire for change in yourself - a new haircut or wanting to shed some winter weight.

Well, when you feel this itch for change - go for it!   Interestingly enough making one small change in your behavior or in your normal routine may have far reaching effects.  In a recent study of dieters, rather than being asked to modify their diet or exercise, the group of volunteers were asked to choose amongst different styles of behaving in the world and do something unusual, such as listen to a different music station on the radio twice a week.  The amazing thing is that they all lost weight. The change in routine presumably heightened their awareness in turn affecting the choices they made. Getting out of "auto-pilot" invites wakefulness and empowered change.

This month break-up your normal routine as a way of waking up:
  • Brush your teeth with the opposite hand
  • Use chopsticks instead of a fork
  • Write your to-do list or your shopping list with your other hand
  • Shop in a different grocery store
  • Wear your watch on a different side
All of these small changes may enhance your awareness in the world and ultimately affect change in other areas of your life.  See what can happen when you mix it up!
