I am using WSM 11 now and found publishing to a shared folder using a UNC path was MUCH slower that publishing to a FTP.
Publishing To:
Local Folder: 1:15 Hours (75 minutes).
FTP on Server: 1:20 Hours.
Shared Folder on Server: 4:30 Hours.
Is it other people's experience that publishing to a shared folder on another server is very expensive?

I had that problem once, too. So I published it to a local folder. And
than a batch script packing a zip, copy it on the network drive and
there an automatic script unpack it.
A shared drive can be slow when it comes to create there new files. I
think the CMS handles UNC like the local file system. Create directly
there. FTP is create the file and than copy it.
