deleting pages

How does everyone else handle the deletion of pages?
We have a user who is needing pages deleted on a regular basis. I gave
them access to delete the pages from within SmartEdit, but then
realized that this isn't really going to delete the page on the live
server. If someone bookmarked the page or does a search they can still
access the page.

Is there a way to do this from within RedDot or will we need to give
them FTP access so they can delete the actual files? (this option
scares us)

thanks,
Brian

Keep in mind that setting is not retrospective and will only keep track of pages from the point it is turned on.

Cheers,

Gavin

Hi Brian

You would be best to tick 'Clean up live server' to enable deleted pages in the CMS to also be deleted on your server.

In SmartTree, Administer Project Settings > Project Variants > *Variant name* > Edit Project Variant and tick 'Clean up live server' at the bottom.

We find there is the odd issue here and there but generally it keeps you server mirroring your released CMS content upon publish.

If you are turning this on it's best to do a full publish of all pages in the project from the start node down so that the mechanism can create the right index to delete from in the future.

If you can't publish with all following and related pages to get the whole site published this feature may not work properly.

In order to get the index reset you can also "change" the FTP target.
Changing it means just adding a slash / to the target in order to make
the CMS believe the target is new.

The best way to go is still a full site publish into an empty folder
and then go from there with all subsequent publishing cycles.

Markus

Hi,

I have published the Up_And_Away project to local delivery server with "Clean up live server" checked for the Project Variant and "Create delete list" also checked for the Delivery Server in Administer Publication. I performed the full site publication in DS. Now I am able to preview the site in DS.

Now I have deleted the sitemap page from Administer project structure in MS. Cleared the cache & RedDotTemp folder. Now I performed the full site publishing with "Publish all following pages" and "Publish related pages" checked. Now when I preview the site in DS, I can't see the sitemap page (which is OK). But sitemap.htm is still present in "Administer Content Groups and Contents" in DS. Do any one know how to such pages in DS

Regards
Tom

Bit strange..if the website isn't showing the page it means DS isn't
serving it then how come you can see the file .

Try clearing up the DS cache...from Administer Liveserver --

The links to it were removed as I would expect given the publish of the full site. Management Server correctly produced the pages with no links to the sitemap. However your sitemap.htm page was not removed from DS likely no delete list was sent. This is based on how you described the attempt to remove the content.

"Cleared the cache & RedDotTemp folder." clearing RedDotTemp after your first fullsite publish is your problem with the process you tried. The first full site publish after turning on Cleanup Live Server and Create Delete List instantiates an index that Management Server uses to determine what's already publish so it knows what to remove. By deleting the RedDotTemp you removed the index. You then reinstantiated an index that never had any information about the sitemap.htm. In this way you've created an orphan that Management Server doesn't know exists. You will have to remove this manually or reconnect sitemap somewhere publish then delete and publish its most recent with all related. OT Support can also help confirm the preferred settings.
