Hi Paul
Yesterday, on Watchman’s at Zion – up on the loop off of Watchman – a small wren-like bird – couldn’t really see the color – very sharp pointy beak – did the most interesting behavior I’ve ever seen – she was using her beak as a tool!
Landed in a bush on rocky area – found insect – took insect out of bush and placed on rock surface. THEN PRECEEDED TO: rear her little head up and smack down her beak into the insect – she did it multiple times. The insect was clearly dead – she was consuming it with this behavior! And then she hopped onto the branch and wiped her beak clean!
I can’t find any info on this specific behavior – do you have any clue?
I can send a photo but it’s not good – the sun was shining on her and into my IPhone!
Regards, Lila Emmer
