We are pleased to announce the publication and launch of the book by Camille Murphy titled:
Frank Malina. Light Art and Scientific Abstraction

The lead author is art and science historian Camile Murphy. Frank J. Malina was an American artist-engineer of Czech origin, who became one of the pioneers of lumino-kinetic art in Paris. From 1944 to 1946 he co-founded and directed the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, the first American university rocket laboratory. His team launched the first human made object into outer space.Then victim of the Maccarthy era witch-hunt, he took refuge in Paris in 1947. He took part in the very first UNESCO programs and became involved in artistic research. Among his first paintings with strings, grids and moiré, one was acquired in 1954 by the Museum of Modern Art of the city of Paris. He then succeeded in developing his first luminous paintings, often illustrating cosmic themes: painted Plexiglas compositions, lit by light bulbs and animated by motors . In 1968, he founded the Leonardo Journal, dedicated to artists working at the intersection of art and science.
The book includes a catalogue raisonnee of all his work. There is an exhibit of his work at the book launch,

L’autrice principale est Camille Murphy, historienne de l’art et des sciences. Frank J. Malina, artiste-ingénieur américain d’origine tchèque, fut l’un des pionniers de l’art lumino-cinétique à Paris. De 1944 à 1946, il cofonde et dirige le Jet Propulsion Laboratory à Pasadena, le premier laboratoire universitaire de fuséologie aux États-Unis et leur fusée est le premier objet a quitter la terre. Victime de la chasse aux sorcières de l’ère McCarthy, il se réfugie à Paris en 1947. Il participe alors aux tout premiers programmes de l’UNESCO et s’engage dans la recherche artistique. Parmi ses premières œuvres, combinant fils, grilles et effets moirés, l’une d’elles est acquise en 1954 par le Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Il développe ensuite ses premières peintures lumineuses, souvent inspirées de thèmes cosmiques : des compositions peintes sur Plexiglas, éclairées par des ampoules et animées par des moteurs. En 1968, il fonde la revue Leonardo, dédiée aux artistes travaillant à l’intersection de l’art et de la science.
Le livre contiens un catalogue raisonnée de son travail artistique. Il y a une expo de ses œuvres a la gallerie.
