Pre-conference Writing Workshop

in coordination 4S/ESOCITE
Cholula, Mexico
5-6 December 2022
Call for Applications
Deadline for Applications: 22 August 2022

Seeking early-career scholars for a highly-interactive 1.5-day workshop to take place in the two days before the joint meeting of the Society for Social Studies of Science and (4S) and Asociación Latinoamericana de Estudios Sociales y Políticos de la Ciencia y la Tecnología (ESOCITE) to be held in Cholula, Mexico.

The Workshop will draw together journal editors from the seven 4S-affiliated journals – Social Studies of ScienceScience, Technology and Human ValuesScience & Technology StudiesEast Asian Science and Technology StudiesEngaging Science, Technology and SocietyCatalyst: Feminism, Theory, TechnoscienceTapuya: Latin American Science, Technology, and Society – and early-career scholars who are committed to contributing to the internationalisation of the field and interested in publishing in English-language STS journals.

Participation is open to PhD students and early-career scholars who are up to five years post-PhD. Applications are particularly encouraged from students and scholars who are based at institutions in Latin America and elsewhere in the Global South, however this is not a requirement for participation. The workshop will include sessions with the full group that allow students and early-career scholars to hear about the insights and experiences of journal editors, who are also senior scholars in the field, and to become aware of the projects that their peers are engaged in. It will also include small-group sessions in which attendees will receive feedback on a draft article manuscript from the journal editors and from their peers – a conversation that will continue after the workshop, as editors follow up on the progress of attendees and ongoing peer support is encouraged. Information-sharing and structured support, both during the workshop and following it, are designed to overcome well-known obstacles to PhD students and early-career scholars from the Global South in publishing in leading English-language journals in this and other fields.

Participants will be asked to submit a draft manuscript by November 21, 2022 to receive feedback on during the workshop. In preparing a submission, participants should keep in mind the types of manuscripts published by the seven 4S-affiliated journals. These include, for example, original research articles, substantial discussion papers, short research notes, and review essays.

Timeline for the workshop is:

Submission of Abstracts: 22nd August 2022

Communication of Acceptance: 5th September 2022

Submission of draft manuscripts (4,000 to 7,000 words): 21st November 2022

Workshop in Cholula: 5th-6th December 2022

Follow up meeting (virtual): TBD

This workshop is supported by the 4S Council, and funding for travel to the conference will be provided for conference participants based at institutions in the Global South (as defined by the UNSSFC). Participants based at institutions in the Global North are encouraged to source funding from their own institutions, and to be in conversation with conference organizers if their participation would only be possible with financial support.

The Workshop participants will be selected by the organizing committee:
Laura Foster, Indiana University Bloomington (PI)
Aalok Khandekar, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad
Anne Pollock, King’s College London
Leandro Rodriguez Medina, Universidad de las Américas Puebla
Timothy Neale, Deakin University
Nicole Nelson, University of Wisconsin
Wen-Hua Kuo, National Yang-Ming University

TO APPLY: please submit 250-word abstract and 150-word biography via this [google form] before 22 August 2022.
