Mnemonic Vestment: "If the wearer is a spontaneous caster, once per day she may use a spell slot to cast a spell from a written source (such as a scrollor spellbook) as if she knew that spell. The spell must be on her spell list, the same spell level or lower than the expended spell slot, and the same type of spell (arcane or divine) as the spell slot expended."

I guess the key question is, do Arcanists count as spontaneous casters?

As far as I know the answer is "yes". You can even, amusingly, carry around your own spellbook and cast the spell out of that.

That's just what I was thinking. It's basically giving you a wizard's arcane item bond. Can I get someone to agree with us? If three "yes" votes, I'll purchase (unless someone authoritative says it a no go).

Except that if you're using it in combat, your spellbook can be fireballed!

Sounds legit to me. You have spell slots/day to use on it.

Brian, your arcanist should get a black fedora.

As far as the designers said during the playtest, the arcanist is neither a spontaneous nor a prepared caster. It's a third category, for which there will be compatible items in the ACG. They explicitly said that pearls of power, runestones of power, and pages of spell knowledge don't work for them.

Just double-checked and the word "spontaneous" doesn't appear a single time in the arcanist class write-up. They're not spontaneous casters.

Boo. I forgot that they had said that about the runestones.

Weirdly, the sorcerer, oracle, inquisitor, and summoner class descriptions don't refer to those classes as "spontaneous" casters either. (Unless I'm missing something.)

Boo to Benn, but I concede (although Matt's point about the other spon casters is quite interesting).

So, what else should a lvl 6 arcanist spend 5000g on? Suggestions appreciated (already have handy haversack, lesser selective rod, cloak of resist +2)

I always like a Circlet of Persuasion.

You have admixture school understanding, I think? If not, lesser elemental rod.

Lesser extend rod. Always useful for buff durations.

Which exploits do you have?  I'm sure I remember you having Evocation School.  I think another was Dimensional Slide?

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, admixture school understanding, dimensional slide, and added potent magic (arcane point to raise either caster level or DC by 2 instead of 1).

Maybe I should just save up for all the goodies that will be in the ACG.

Just putting my own thoughts out there. The only restriction the design team has put for for items was for runestones. From Jason:

And FYI... RAW runestones do not work for consume spells class feature. That said, we will undoubtedly be putting some items in the book that fill a similar function for the Arcanist.

Jason Bulmahn
Lead Designer

I don't see any reason why this should apply to any other magical items besides runestones as well as specifically addressing this class feature.

I just wouldn't risk it. Nothing is clear about which items work with the arcanist until things are clarified better in the ACG. Nothing worse than having to sell a bunch of useless items after the book comes out for half gold. I remember them saying something more specific than the quoted comment, though. Runestones not working for consume spells is obvious, but I remember them saying something more definitive about runestones not working at all. I'm not going to go dig for the quote, though, if it's possible I imagined it.
