I have a redcap problem. I’m trying to upload a randomization chart and I get the error below about the page hitting a limit. Unfortunately, our admin team cannot find where this setting it to modify it, does anyone have insight they can share as to wear this setting is located to modify?

ERROR: REDCap ran out of memory!

This is in your system's php.ini file. As i recall there are two parameters that may need to be increased, but i forget what they are. I can look it up later or perhaps someone else can chip in?

thank you for the help, we got the file uploaded...now i get an error: "16137" is not a valid categorical option for the field "record_id" but i get it for every line in the .csv file from 16137 - the end

record_id  is the field we're randomizing (vs study_id which is the redcap 1-million entry id variable name)
The randomization table has ~1 million lines.

Is this mean this is the most you can have in redcap? It seems weird that you can only random 16,000 entries.

Anyone know what this means or how you would fix it?

Thank you,
Florence

I'm not aware of there being a hard limit to the number of records, only a practical limit caused by the system slowing down as it processes large numbers of records. If you talk to your system admins they should be able to post a question to the REDCap Consortium's Answerhub site and someone should know the answer.

Florence,

If you are using excel to manage your data then that could be the problem

Try loading the csv into another spreadsheet program - I have used open office or Mac numbers in the past

There can be hidden characters

Or try loading it into to a line editor and carefully look for hidden characters that may appear

Hello Florence,

My guess is that you are wanting randomisation numbers rather than categorical groups for your randomisation allocation field, and have used Excel to save the project’s data dictionary before loading it. If your randomisation allocation field is named [record_id] and your randomisation schedule has around 1M rows, then that is far too much text to fit into a single cell in Excel (the limit is 32k).

That is, rather than something like this:

                1, Intervention | 2, Control

You had set up the [record_id] field choices something like this:

                1, 1000001 | 2, 1000002 | 3, 1000003 | … | 1999999, 1999999

But Excel has truncated this, I am guessing at this point:

                1, 1000001 | 2, 1000002 | 3, 1000003 | … | 16136, 1016136

That means that when you try to upload your randomisation schedule it is failing at 16137, because that is not a valid choice value for your randomisation allocation field.

I hope that helps.

Regards,

Luke
