Surveys for English speaking and Spanish speaking participants

I am working with an investigator who is currently executing a longitudinal research study and began collecting data from English-speaking participants.  There are about 8 surveys that are completed by the participants via ASIs over several time points.

Now, the investigator also wants to recruit participants who only speak Spanish.  The investigator had the surveys translated into Spanish.  

I gave the researcher two options for incorporating these translated surveys into her current REDCap project:

• Add the new translated surveys to her list of data collection instruments and create a new Arm for the Spanish-speaking participants.  Create the same event structure as Arm 1 (for English speaking participants) and select the Spanish surveys at the events where appropriate.
• Add the newly translated Spanish items into each English instrument.  Add branching logic to each item so that the correct language will appear based on a [language] variable.

With each of these options, the research staff must create new variables such as [demo_dobsp] to designate the Spanish version of the item.  When it comes time for analysis, they will have to export and rename the variables so that they can be combined with the English items.

Does anyone have a more efficient way of doing this without creating a new REDCap project for just the Spanish-speaking participants?

Hello Rosanne,

 

Rather than duplicating the forms and having to rename variables, it would be simpler to set up a Spanish version of the surveys in a new project. That way you can keep all of the same variable names and the datasets can simply be appended one to the other without any need for renaming.

 

If you do it that way, and can use external modules, then take a look at my Language Switcher module (https://github.com/lsgs/redcap-language-switcher). It's in the official REDCap Repository. It lets you set up multiple languages in different projects (including all built-in REDCap text) and switch between them as you need within your primary project.

 

There is also a "Multilingual" external module that has been around for quite a while and is in wide use. It's pretty horrible to work with though, in my experience.

I haven’t had the pleasure of using Lukes language switcher, but did a complex project using multilingual involving 4 languages.  Agree it was a bit of a fiddle but the main solution was to keep it away from Exel which corrupted its syntax.

Did you get the result you were shooting for?

I came upon an issue that you may have a solution for.  When I am creating Automated Survey Invitations, is there a way to switch the text in the email between 2 languages or do I have to create one email that contains both languages?

There is a way to set-up a toggle so that the questions/answer switch languages. Then all of your data in in one spot, in your language output of choice. Look up REDCap language modules. Below is a link that talks about them too.

I had the REDCap administrator make your Language Switcher v1.0.3 available to me.  Based on your documentation, I need to have access to the Control Center (to edit the Custom Language file).  How do I request that from the REDCap administrator?  I assume this is not available to standard REDCap users.

Yes, you’re correct that regular users cannot upload language files. Someone with the ability to copy files to the server needs to upload the file into the redcap/languages directory.

 

Having said that, your best bet now is to upgrade to REDCap v12.x and use the now-mult-in multi-language functionality rather than external modules.

Thanks for getting back to me.  The university I am working with uses the stable branch of REDCap.  They are currently on version 11.1.8.  I imagine I will be waiting a significant amount of time for version 12 to be installed.  In the meantime, I will try to use the Multilingual external module.  The form translations (while tedious) seem to be working well. However, I am having inconsistent implementation of the language translations in the configuration file for this module...but I will keep working at it.  Ideally I need the language translations in this file to work for what the survey respondents see when they choose to end a survey and return later.
