Hi all,

ORCID Support

I've been working through the requirements for ORCID support and have produced a bit of a specification outlining what we aim to deliver. You can view it here

I've listed 3 requirements but I believe the third requirement "Update ORCID profile works information with data collections from ReDBox" may need further discussion as to come up with the best solution. If there's been discussion in the community about how institutions plan to provide updates to ORCID profiles, it'd be great if we could get some information on what the current thinking is. I've provided a couple of ways that ReDBox could do it in the document.

In this release we'll focus on the ability to:
  1. reference institutional party records (e.g. from Mint) using their ORCID
  2. reference external parties using their ORCID (via the ORCID search api)
Any feedback you have is very much welcome.

Data collection form enhancements

Additionally, as there are a few changes already being made to the data collection form as part of these new features it will be efficient for us to improve some other aspects of the form
while we're in there. Some ideas we've had put to us are:
  1. Improving the FOR, SEO code selection widgets so that you no longer need to press the select button. Potentially a text search feature for the codes as well.
  2. Adding the ability to lookup grants using the ANDS Research Activity API
  3. Improving the map widget
I'll be producing a specification for this much like the ORCID one but if you have any other suggestions or have implemented something yourself in your institutional builds that might have value to all if it was in the core. Please let me know and we can do some analysis on it.

Testing

We're targeting to have this functionality ready for some testing of the RIF-CS 1.6 support, form enhancements and ORCID support by the end of August with a release shortly after. If you are able to help with some testing around then, please let me know!

Thanks,
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Excellent, thanks.

I've viewed the ORCID specification outline and it looks pretty good, however I have a question. Is the intention to *replace* the NLA Trove interface or to *add* a new ORCID interface to ReDBox? I ask because I wonder if it may be advantageous (at least in the near term) to send the ORCID to NLA Trove (in addition to sending it to Research Data Aust) to enhance the info about the researcher on a relatively popular website (ie. Trove).

Thanks.
Cheers, Grant

Hi Grant,

I was thinking we'd add the ORCID interface (a third tab) so you could still also search Trove. We could make which ones are visible a configuration item if you didn't want to use both. Additionally, as part of the RIF-CS enhancement work, we'll expose the identifier value as a field so if there is an external party already present in RDA you could also manually enter its identifier that's at the bottom of the page to reference them.

Regarding publishing ORCIDs to Trove, once you have the ORCIDs stored in Mint it should be a simple change to the eac-cpf template to include that value in the OAI-PMH feed.

Thanks,
Andrew
