All,
I just wanted to thank Stacy, Mike, Nancy & Amy for the time to work
with their classes. It really helps me improve my ideas and
strategies and also to stay connected with what happens in your
classrooms. Also thanks to Denise for organizing everything and
keeping everything working!
Probability was a running theme this week and i wanted to share with
you some resources/ideas I came across:
Here a page I made on my site to collect coin-flipping data:
http://sites.google.com/site/ciese07030/Home/coin-flipping-probabilities
Here are some nice NCTM activities I came across or used this week (if
you would like a copy let me know and I will send you one):
Probability Experiments with Shared Spreadsheets, Mathematics Teaching
in the Middle School, April 2010 (similar to my web page above)
Genetics as a Context for the Study of Probability, Mathematics
Teaching in the Middle School, December 1999 (I think I left a copy in
Nancy's room)
Geometric Probability and the Area of Leaves, Mathematics Teaching in
the Middle School, March 2005 (Mike should have a copy of this one)
Coincidentally this article was in the NY times this week:
http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/04/25/chances-are/?emc=eta1
Pretty serious math talk for anyone who is interested.
The '24' games have been successful although lots of tweaks were
necessary along the way. I'm really impressed with how excited and
how good the students are at 24 problems.
I'll be in May 4th and May 11th again. These are chaotic days but the
end is in sight now!
Have a great weekend!
Greg
