I could make a decent lie and insist it was when I saw a high school
production--that was one of the things that started it, but it did not
really REALLY start it. The first thing I thought after seeing that
was, "They swore a lot." Funny thing--like a week after I found
myself humming Empty Chairs at Empty Tables and next thing I knew I
liked it.
But no, that's not the very firstest thing.
I could lie and insist it was when I heard Castle on a Cloud and
Little People on a Brodway Kids album--showtunes were instigated into
my life at an early period until I became personally sick of it until
some point I discovered Les Miz. Except really I had no idea where
the songs came from, I just knew they were interesting.
I have been a Terrence Mann fan since like 8--Beauty and the Beast.
But this was not it.
It really was when watching the PBS special at the Cameron Mackintosh
section and the brought up "LAY MIHZELAHB" with the ever awesome Turn-
table and all of the Random Cosettes from foreign countries. I
remember mocking the name some time afterward--I still feel bad about
it...
A week later I saw it with a friend at a high school and was in
denial--because of not liking showtunes for a while--until I came out
and liked it. I even have a closet shrine...
So--yeah!
That's my Mizzy story.
I'm just curious--what was your first shot of Mizz?
I had heard of Les Mis because a friend of mine played Little Cosette
in her school production (so I knew about the song "Castle on a
Cloud") and she and her mom told me a little of the story. Even then,
I thought it interesting, but I hadn't developed an obsession with
it.
Then my piano teacher (who's also a friend of mine) had the piano book
and when I asked about it, she told me a little more about the story,
including some details that the other people had left out (i.e.
Eponine, etc.) and played "On My Own" for me. I thought it sounded
pretty, and so I began to listen to the 30 second clips on the
internet and then requested the cast recording from my library (they
have the OLC and the OBC listed as the same recording, but I didn't
know that at the time) and soon got the OLC, and once I listened to
that, I was hooked. I've been a mizzie ever since.
That was my short and boring LM story

My story...
In 2004 (or 2003) my Dad's singing group did this show called Broadway
Gold, and it had all these different songs from various musicals. They
had 5 songs from Les Mis - At The End of the Day, I Dreamed A Dream,
Bring Him Home, DYTPS and the Finale. For a while I only listened to
ATEOTD, IDAD and DYTPS (and for the longest time I thought Valjean
sang DYTPS XD). But I liked it, so I saved a copy of the OBC but
didn't listen to it until my family and I were going on a long car
trip. I still didn't really get the story, (especially since I screwed
up and put Turning right after Stars) but the music got me interested
and so...that's how I got started...lol
Isn't it fun reading a long paragraph on a mundane story? XD

How I got into LM:
I found the TAC on my video shelf and watched it.
Then I made my mom take me to see the show.
Then I got Mizzy Fever.
The End
