Ok, here is a brief recap and what we learned on Sunday.... 1) 6 WSU
players showed up, mad props to them and a 'where were you guys?' to
the rest of you, except Dane. 2) UI was just as lame, with 6 players
there as well. 3) We need to work on several things, which include
but are not limited too - hustling down the field on the pull,
throwing under pressure, popping in a zone and staying closer (and on
the correct side) to our men when they don't have the disc. 4) We
have the potential to hang with any team on the east side of
Washington if we show up with enough numbers and make slightly better
decisions.
So, the results and synopsis are as follows:
WSU/UI vs. GURU 11 - 15
We opened up a 4-0 lead, gave back 8 to our 1 to go to half 5-8.
Second half opened with us bringing it back to 8-9 before several TO's
within 25 yds of our own goal line opened a sizable gap. We then
rallied to end the game 11 - 15 GURU.
We started out by being broken a bunch, which we stepped up and solved
for the most part in the second half. Staying close to our defensive
assignments was a struggle, and making some errant deep throws hurt
us. We did a great job of running a rabbit on them and getting
several D's, we also started throwing to space as well, which was
good. Final note, we need to run through the disc and not stop and
wait for it...that equals we get D'd.
I should also note that we played 6-1 through almost the entire game
with Maribeth and Sarah V. playing some pretty good D and O under the
circumstances.
Other game: EWU 2 - 13 WSU Alum & Friends - It is a huck game,
the alum & friends 'old man' EWU and AC skies two dudes, one of which
is Cyle, for a score.
WSU/UI vs. EWU 13 - 15
This game opened up very poorly for us, as EWU ran off 8 points using
a zone as we struggled to have our poppers be effective and our
handlers make good decisions. We lose half 3 - 8. Coming out of half
we trade points, and steal a few here and there. At 6 - 10, I can't
take the poor play of the poppers anymore and step onto the field for
an 'in-situ' lesson. We efficiently move the disc down the field with
very little running from all as we are patient and have poppers
sitting in the holes supporting the handlers. We take this momentum,
as well as the chance to play D and bring the game back to 10 - 12.
We pull to 13 - 14, but then give up a quick big huck with hard cap
on. Game over.
Notes about this game are basically, our handlers need to move the
disc more efficiently back and forth, avoid high stall counts, and the
poppers need to moving inside of the wall and not behind it. Also,
poppers need to look at the space and not just run around behind the
cup. Defensively, well, we played mostly offense...but outside of
several defensive communication mix-ups, the zone looks were alright
when the mark wasn't broken. Man D we were still trailing most of the
time, but tended to be closer to our men than in the GURU game as
well. TO's in within 25 yds of our own end zone also didn't help us.
Offensively, when we were in a ho set, our cutters need to make harder
cuts in and out, as well as move more than 5 yds in a cut and not
leave the handlers stranded.
We did a great job of stepping up our D in the second half to win the
half (not the game) and really give us a chance to maybe win the
game. It was good to see us fight back with some intensity and
drive. Build on it now.
Other game: GURU vs. WSU Alum & Friends - 6 - 15 - Old guys roll
with an unstoppable huck offense (mainly b/c GURU didn't recognize
that was all that they were doing and giving up the deep look.
The final game I"ll leave to someone else as I had to leave, but it
was against the boys & friends. Hopefully all that came learned
something and feel that they are better now, or at least a bit more
tired. At least you know what 'game speed' is more like than just a
scrimmage or hat tourney.
