Sectionals in Logan, Utah was a lot of fun. The drive down was not, it
was an 11 hour drive plus the time change, so we all got into Logan at
5am. More nonsense ensued when the address that I was given said 1000W
which lead us to a butter factory and a barren road. We called the
Utah State player whom we were staying with (he was surprisingly
cheerful for being woken up at 5am) who informed us that he lived at
1000E. In conclusion we all got 3 hours of sleep before our 9am game.

Saturday started off chilly, but ended up being perfect ultimate
weather with a warm overcast day with a slight breeze.
UI vs BSU:
Kyle wanted to maintain some face against the BSU players whom he
played high school ultimate. We started off going back and forth on a
couple big hucks and a couple skying points by Harrison. Half way
through the first half Stach finally convinced us to follow a more
conservative strategy of patience, which ended up working really well.
We beat them deep a couple times in the beginning and so BSU was
giving us big unders which we took advantage of and worked it down the
field really well multiple times. Some more scoring and we ended up
winning 15-13.

Bye:

UI vs MSU:
Bozeman is a really fun team to play against if only because their
whole team is a pretty friendly bunch. The beginning of this game was
really good for us, we exchanged points till 2-2 off of some big hucks
by both Idaho as well as MSU. Our patience from the previous game
kicked in and we went up 5-2 without an offensive turn. However MSU
got back in their grove and we got a little over confident and stopped
working our game of patience and began jamming stuff up the line more
than we should have. It was close the whole game with a couple good
zone looks, some great hucks to deep cuts, as well as lots of patient
in-cut offense in both the vertical and horizontal stack. We started
utilizing a last back and being more aware of switches on defense
which really helped to slow their big huck game down. We ended up
going to a universe point, we received the pull and met MSU's first
zone of the game. We were doing well against it, but do to a
miscommunication on two open players under the disc we turned it over
in our third where MSU promptly scored to finish the game. 14-15 MSU.

UI vs UM:
We were all really tired after playing a really hard and long game
against MSU, only 3 subs, as well as only 3 hours of sleep. We played
the first handful of points hard and were down 4-2. By that time we
pretty much gave up on defense due to sheer exhaustion. With this in
mind, we began playing a couple upside down points, and I think UM
finally realized that we had just given up when we pulled the disc
and...no one from Idaho left the end-line to play defense. Which was
pretty funny because UM was talking about a strategy to work it down
the field with no defense, because they thought it was some crafty
trick, it was not...and they scored easily. We ended up losing 15-4
though we were too exhausted to really care.

"Party":
Utah State was not allowed to hold a 'party' so they told us to go to
this pizza joint in a basement of some building. No other team went
(to our knowledge) and it was a weird really grudge-y "party". The
lesson I learned from this event was, do not expect any party in Utah
because of their lame rules. IE 3% beer and the first time you buy
alcohol you must buy food as well as well as a handful of other laws
that clamp down on any good party.
(We heard that UM went to a frat party that was completely dry and so
there was just a crate of Monsters for everyone to get buzzing off of
caffeine)

Sunday:
Really sunny outside, yet with significantly more wind.

UI vs BSU:
Because we were ineligible teams to go to regions we played each other
again. We kept using our switching on man defense to get some good
turns, but the wind wrecked some havoc with out offense and we
struggled to get it going like we did saturday. We ended up losing by
a couple points.

UI vs UM:
We learned a really cool ninja fighting spirit game at the start which
was fun. Both teams decided that there was a long drive ahead so we
decided to play a game to 9 with 'skippsies' being worth 2
(meaning...if you called our 'skippsies' and skipped the disc into the
end-zone and the receiver catching it with one hand...it was worth 2,
any other skip was a turn over). This was a lot of fun, with UM
playing better than us but losing it on some poor skips into the end-
zone. We ended up going to a universe point--which had to be won on a
'skippsies', there were a handful of turns but Jake found himself open
on a deep cut and got the disc outside the endzone, dumped it to Stach
who popped up a sweet 'skippsie' to Harrison who caught it one handed
for the win. This game was a lot of fun, and UM showed their true
spirit by giving us 2 real beers, which was a pleasant treat after the
3% beer of the previous night.

All in all, we played pretty well with everyone being able to adjust
to different handler sets, switching off between our Ho stack and Vert
stack, as well as spurts of good hard downfield defense with some good
defensive switching. Some things to work on would be playing hard
defense all the time, utilizing the dump swing to get it off the line,
and not throwing deep to players who are not open.

Nice last tournament of the year.
Feel free to add any addition comments/thoughts you had about the
weekend.

Thanks for the report, Sam. Great job Panhandlers! The new name really
captures the new and exciting spirit of UI ultimate.

1. UI won games at sectionals -- you guys really put Idaho on the map!

2. Now that BSU has a team, maybe they'll put a bid in to host
sectional next year - far more convenient for everyone.

3. Sorry about the sleep deprivation -- that sounds epic. I did that
once in Kansas and I still have nightmares. Egad.

4. See on the field soon.

Jesse

This whole thing about Stache telling everyone about a conservative
patient approach is foreign to me... Is this the same Stache I think
it is?
