RED BULL CREATION 2011 TEAM FAQ

The long awaited FAQ is in!  This is a compilation of many awesome team questions, and those we anticipated you might ask. We know that some of these answers might lead to more questions, and we want to hear them. As you carefully read each item, keep track of your additional questions, put them all together in one email and send to rb.create...@gmail.com.

WHAT IS THE LATEST RBC EVENT SCHEDULE?

Some minor details regarding the event timeline have changed due to production and site logistics.

Weds. July 6

5-7:00pm: Optional team check-in at Newtown Barge Park (Newtown Barge Playground, Commercial St, Brooklyn, NY 11222). Here you can get your credentials, and get a quick peek at the build location for RBC. We will assign team RV’s, for those using them.

7-10:00pm:  Party Time. Have a few adult beverages with the organizers, and your fellow teams.  The drinks are on us.  We would like to have everyone here if possible (we will be making some introductions and announcements). Attendance is recommended, but not mandatory.   We will be emailing the location details soon.

Thurs. July 7

9:00am: Meet at the RBC Newtown Barge build-site with your team  Make sure to bring your 200lbs of tools and materials with you.  All teams and team members must be in attendance.

10:00am: Safety Briefing!!: All teams get together with the shop foremen for an initial safety briefing where we talk about the shop rules.

11:00am: Tool/material weigh-in.  Who brought what and why?  We’re dying to know.

11:55am “Topic Announcement”!

12:00pm High Noon: START BUILDING!

Sunday July 10th

10:59 and 59 sec. am:  Tools Down!

3:00pm:  Gates open at McCarren Park.  The live “show and tell” event begins. You are the rock stars!  Each team will display their Creation, demonstrate what it does to the judge, and tell the tale of how they did it.  Be prepared to talk and be interviewed in front of media and talk about your Creation.

7:00pm: Live show completed.  Scratch head in awe.  Wonder what the hell just happened...

8:00pm: A post-event gathering is in the works.  More details soon.

TOOLS/MATERIALS

When is the list of tools and materials going to be posted?

We have the complete list of tools and materials and will make that available for you on Friday (June 17th).

Do the teams have to share tools?

We are providing each team with an assortment of hand tools.  These are yours to take home at the end of the event (and we’ll ship them to you).  They will live in your teams work space.

We will also have a fairly massive central shop/ communal workspace.  We have a lot of tools (from top manufacturers), and we have 64 team members! We've worked very hard to create a diverse, comprehensive, temporary shop.  We all know that "making" can take all shapes, forms and sizes (that's the best part).  However, anticipating that many teams would be travelling, we decided to put a lot of effort and resources into procuring "heavy" non-portable items (welding stations, etc).

Yes, we do have electronics gear, however, if there are smaller specialty items that you like to work with, we would suggest bringing them with your 200 lbs allotment.

Big and “dangerous” tools will live in the communal workspace, which all teams will have access to throughout the duration of the build-a-thon. Some tools will be checked out and/or allocated through a sign-in sheet. All of this will be facilitated by a shop foremen (who will manage tool availability).

With all that in mind, we are working hard to create an environment representing the hackerspace ethos. Yes this is a “competition”, but it’s really more about having an awesome collective experience with other creative people from all over the country.   We highly encourage you to be a good neighbor, and help your fellow teams when and where you can.  That’s what this event is about...

What’s the real deal with the 200 lb weigh-in?

The 200 lbs is each team’s “zeroed out” point for the start of the challenge. Basically, we’d like to try and create a baseline for all teams to start from. We also wanted to give your team creative ownership by allowing teams to start with specialized tools and materials of  your own choice.

Each team starts with the 200lbs of tools and/or raw material that is to be used specifically for the building of your team’s creation. This may include any type of specialty tool or equipment that you know you are going to use.  It must be either raw material, raw components, or tools.  Now, with that being said, a team can show up with some really awesome gear, a feather, or 200lbs of pork rinds.

Note: There are no weight restrictions regarding how much you can bring to the site shortly after the start of the competition.

Can we ship our 200 lbs of materials ahead of time (to avoid bringing them through an airport)?

Yes, but unfortunately, it can’t be shipped to the build site. Therefore, we recommend that you have a mailing company hold your items near Newtown Barge Park, Commercial St, Brooklyn NY.  Maybe reach out to a New Yorker and see if they can receive/hold a package for you.  Everyone’s got a crazy cousin or uncle, and they usually live in New York.  It’s a fact.

During the competition are we allowed to buy/source/scavenge anything we want?

Yes, during the build, you are allowed to do all of that by any means necessary. Have friends or family in town with cool tools? Great! Know a shop with materials and supplies? Awesome. However, all final Creations must be assembled at the build site, by team members.

Can we pre-build/plan?

No pre-building. You can bring materials and tools that are available commercially. You cannot bring anything that was pre-fabricated or pre-built off site.

Yes to pre-planning. You can pre-plan and pre-design to the best of your ability. Whether that’s getting in touch with friends in NY with access to tools, making a list of local resources, setting up “war rooms” back home, etc. you are definitely allowed to pre-plan. We also will be releasing some hints at the secret topic starting next week.

Can you confirm whether safety gear (eye protection, gloves, welding suites, etc) will be available in the workshop?  We need to know whether we should bring our own.

Yes. we will be providing standard safety gear: all helmets, gloves, glasses, jackets, etc will be provided in the shop. No need to pack your own safety gear unless you are really attached to your own stuff. And not to worry, none of that gear will be counted as part of the initial 200 lbs.  Safety trumps all in Red Bull Creation.

If we have some innocuous personal effects (like a hair brush) that wasn't counted in the 200lbs, but we have a use for it, can it be used in the project?

Yes. after the build starts, anything is at your disposable to include in the project, even toiletry items you brought from home.

WHERE CAN TEAM MEMBERS STAY DURING THE COMPETITION

Whats up with the Onsite RV’s

RVs will be available for teams to stay in. RVs are available starting Weds. July 6th @ 5:00pm and ending Monday July 11th at 8:00am!

Note: Please respect the hard check-out of 8am due to city permitting/production.

Do the teams have to stay in the provided RVs?

No.  Teams can arrange for their own lodging at your own expense.

Can we bring our own RV?

No. We’ve had our RV’s pre-approved to be on city streets.

What amenities are provided?

We provide basic showers and bathrooms. Teams are expected to bring additional comfort items, toiletries, etc.

What about parking for my car/trailer?

Unfortunately, we can not provide private parking for all the team vehicles.  However     there is plenty of free street parking within the immediate area.

SITE LOGISTICS

We’ll have a completed build site map and rendering for you next week. Please hang tight.

DURING THE BUILD

Is the build site open around the clock?

Yes.  The site is open around the clock, and security is provided (meaning, your project and personal gear will be protected).

Will we be able to have access to a 220vc pigtail/ plug/outlet?

Yes, but we need to know what it is you need to plug in beforehand.   Power draw is definitely an issue.

What type of Internet access will there be?

We are providing Internet access on site via multiple Verizon MiFi modems. If you have your own MiFi we suggest you bring it along with you.  We will have an air-conditioned lounge on site as well.

Will there be an errand runner?

No, it’s on you guys to make the project happen. That’s part of the challenge.

Can we get items shipped directly to us while we are on site?

No. For the same reasons as above, we can’t have any standard mail items delivered to the build site. Please locate a mailing company near Newtown Barge Park or reach out to a local New Yorker!

Can someone bring us a tool or materials to the site?

Yes!  Person to person delivery is fine with us.

To what extent can outside help be used?

Although, only 4 team members’ physical bodies are allowed on site. Teams are allowed to seek advice/research/troubleshoot/acquire raw materials from their crews. BUT... all the “real work”, the actual building/designing/assembling/coding/etc. can only be done by the team members on site. Because that’s the whole point of the game!

Ok, so where’s the line?

If you can answer “yes” to the following questions, you are in good shape

-Did we build the final Creation onsite?

-Did we code our own software?

-Did we have help troubleshooting or brainstorming from outside, but the final design and Creation was done by ourselves?

We think you get the idea!

Will you feed us?

Yes.  You will be well-fed.  4 meals are provided daily throughout the duration of the competition for team members only.  We will try our best to accommodate any dietary restrictions. Did all of you fill out the food/clothing form?

CREATION PARAMETERS

Is there a weight limit to our Creation?

Yes. 1,000lbs max.

Is there a size limit to our Creation?

Each creation must fit within a 6’x 8’ area max.

Is there a height limit to our Creation?

“Travel height” can be no more than 6'6" max (your creation can be taller at the “show and tell” site, therefore, you can design your creation in such a way that it can be re-assembled)

Please note:  All of these numbers are based on the transportation and production logistics of moving the Creations to the McCarren park “show and tell”.   We hope/ feel it should be enough though.

What is the build topic?

Aha, trick question.  You might be Jedis, but that one does not work on us.  Also, those aren’t the droids we were looking for.  Wait a second...

LOGOS/SPONSORSHIPS

Can we wear our own team branded shirts ?

You are welcome to make your own jerseys to wear during the build and we will also be providing some really great work clothes (with your team name and everything). Did all of you fill out the food/clothing form?

Are we allowed to get outside sponsorships?  We have some companies that might provide equipment for our war room, or tools to send us with. Can their logos be on our shirts?

You can obtain materials from outside sponsorships. Logos can be worn on shirts during the build period. However, if you do put any logos on a shirt, please be sure they are not “drink companies”, or other “energy” products.

MEDIA

What kind of media will be on site?  What are exposure opportunities?

There will be a lot of media present during the build and the live event.  If you’re extra interested in doing interviews and press, please let us know.

Also, Red Bull will have a full video production crew on site filming the entire event. Please note all team members must sign an appearance release to participate in Red Bull Creation.  This means Red Bull can use your likeness in content products that comes out of the event (ie television, online video, you get the idea).

Can we film during the build and show?

Definitely, team members and visitors are allowed to document (film, photograph) the build. We, of course, we would love it if you FB, Tweet, Youtube etc any footage you have during the competition. Also, tag them tweeters #rbcreation.

MONEY QUESTIONS

Will we have to pay taxes on the $2000 travel stipend, or are the taxes being covered by RBC?

Unfortunately, there is no way around this. We tried but, alas, Uncle Sam is the man, and he wants to collect his taxes. Please be ready to sign a W-9 on site. You may use an organization, a company or a non-profit, etc. to sign the W-9. If not, a single individual on the team will have to be responsible for the tax liability.

COMPETITION

How are we judged?

You will be judged on creativity, functionality, and demonstration, with a few little twists and turns thrown in.

How do our Creations get from the build site to the show?

We will have a small fleet of trucks, and a crew of big men.

How do we get from the build to the show?

People shuttles!  It’s not that far to walk either, about a mile.

Is the competition a public event?

Yes! The Red Bull Creation main event at McCarren Park is free and open to the public.  It’s been advertised all over New York. This is where you can invite your family, friends and anyone else to come and watch you on a jumbotron (really).

Location: McCarren Park, Brooklyn NY.

Date/Time: Sunday July 10th 3pm - 7pm.

VISITORS

Can I bring my significant other and/or friends, family, kids?

Friends and family will be allowed to check out the build site, but only during certain specified windows of time (safety reasons).  We will be announcing these windows soon.

Can I bring my pets?

No.  Unless it is a certified service animal, we highly recommend you don’t bring critters given the potential summer heat and the overall nature of the build site (ie not very animal friendly). However If you have a specific need for a pet, we will go on a case-by-case basis.

This crazy build-a-thon is during July in New York... will we melt?

Yes.  However, we will do our best to keep you cool with shade, misters, an A/C lounge, and more!  Note that there will be plenty of ice and unlimited hydration.

AFTERMATH

How are the prizes distributed between team members?

This is up to you. Each team is responsible for what happens with the winnings.

How do we get everything home?

You are responsible for making sure all your personal items go home with you.  However, we will cover the cost of shipping the job box we provide, team tools, and any prizes.

What happens to unused and left over materials?

We will be donating useful materials to local creative spaces whenever and wherever possible.

What happens to our creations after the event?

You own your Creations, and are responsible for taking them home.  We will be able to store them till Tuesday evening if you need a little extra time.   If you cannot take your Creation back with you, we can help dispose, recycle, or donate it.  Red Bull may want to use a select number of Creations in the future for a traveling exhibit though.  Once again, you own your Creations.

When do we have to leave the site?

Work sites and your personal tools must be packed up and consolidated shortly after  completion of the build Sunday afternoon (11am to 1pm). Teams can stay in RV’s Sunday night.  But again, you must be “checked out” of the RV by 8am Monday.

One more very important thing

We’re all really excited about this event, and it’s been a very long time in the making.   We can’t begin to express how honored we are that you’re interested in being a part of it.

Red Bull Creation is a competition, but it’s a very friendly one.  Its primary goal is to get some really awesome people together, and build some amazing stuff.   We all feel that we’re well on the way to making that happen.

We’ve really enjoyed communicating with you up to this point, and can’t wait to meet everyone in New York next month.

Very Sincerely,

The Red Bull Creation Team

One question my team members keep asking me to check on, is how code
will be treated. For example, are we restricted to whatever libraries
come with the microcontroller? Can we use open source code within our
program?

I don't personally see it as an issue, but my teammates are not
programmers and they think using already developed open source code
within a program is in the gray area. So please let us know what you
think.

For some reason I'm under the impression that the micro-controller we're supposed to be using is the Arduino (oh yeah--it's one of the constraints: http://creation.redbullusa.com/browse.php). I'm also pretty sure all Arduino code is open source as that's sort of the point of the Arduino project. Not being able to use open source code would be like having to invent your own screwdriver or hammer. In my humble opinion of course.

Check out the Arduino site here:

http://www.arduino.cc/

It's a great reference, and you should download the software now as the libraries don't come on the micro-controller, as far as I know. Oh--also--get an Arduino as it doesn't appear to be in the materials and tool lists unless I'm missing something.

The Arduino was a constraint for the qualifier.

We had the same question.  If it's already been written and it's open
source, seems like it violates the "write your own code" rule, but
also seems completely reasonable.  To use an Arduino, you're already
relying upon the basic libraries that are part of that package.

IMO using libraries for any micro controller should be allowed. But libraries are significantly different than off-written code (0pen source or not)

I say start a new challenge with a clean slate.

Also with the availability of so many different controllers I don't see why a specific one should be required.

To me, if it's openly available libraries, it would only make sense. Like NewSoftSerial for Arduino - very useful, but would be impossible to recreate in 3 days.

I don't think there is a limit on uCs now, that was just for the qualifier. I know we are planning on bring some FEZ IIs (.NET Micro Framework) as well as Arduinos.
