One day, Sunder introduces Yamini as his girlfriend to Karthik and his friends. On their first meeting, Karthik and Yamini have a bitter experience but slowly develop a special bond. Karthik tries to stay away from Yamini since he does not want to break his friend's heart, but a sequence of events brings them closer. Eventually, Sunder's father arranges for Karthik and Yamini to be married.

After their wedding, Karthik learns that Madhesh had used a photograph that he had taken to win a national award. After this incident, he turns into a physically abusive alcoholic, and people start doubting his sanity and his mental health is somewhat affected. Yamini supports him, hoping that he will succeed one day. Days later when the residents of Karthik's house berate Karthik behind his back in front of Yamini, she gets angry and defensive and supports her husband. After watching TV where he sees Madhesh win an award for his photo, Karthik starts breaking the TV and accidentally pushes Yamini in a fit of rage. This leads to Yamini's miscarriage. Yamini returns a few days later from the hospital and stops talking to Karthik entirely. This makes Karthik come to terms with reality, and he mends his ways. He finally gets a break and becomes a professional wildlife photographer, and one of his photographs gets nominated for an International Photography Award, which he wins. On this occasion, Karthik thanks everyone for their support and Yamini for her faith in him and declares his love for her. Yamini finally relents and talks to Karthik. Then Karthik says thanks to Madhesh where the film ends.

Jyothika was initially approached by Selvaraghavan, to do the lead female role. Though she liked the role, she wasn't ready to accept the role as her son Dev was getting 1 year old. Later, Richa Gangopadhyay replaced her. Selvaraghavan began the film featuring Dhanush and Richa Gangopadhyay, who had initially been signed to do another film with him.[3][4] Richa began shooting for the film in Kannur in May 2011, and the film was wrapped up within three months.[5] The title was finally changed to Mayakkam Enna from 'Idhu Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam' in August 2011, with reports suggesting that Dhanush would sport four different looks in the film.[6][7] Selvaraghavan has since made it clear that the film has a totally different script from the film that had been shelved.[8] It was said that Dhanush would be seen in various stages, as a boy just out of his teenage to an old man.[9]

Yuvan Shankar Raja replaced G. V. Prakash Kumar as music composer in the film, with the latter reporting it was due to "money and time issues".[10][11] However, in a sensational turn, G. V. Prakash Kumar was assigned again as composer after Yuvan Shankar Raja moved out of the project as he was busy with other commitments and could not give priority to Selvaraghavan, who was in rush to complete the film and move over to his next project, Vishwaroopam. On 24 May 2011, it was announced that Selvaraghavan was ousted from the project.[12][13]

The soundtrack, composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar in his second collaboration with Selvaraghavan (after Aayirathil Oruvan), was released on 23 September 2011 at Radio Mirchi's Chennai station. The soundtrack has received generally positive reviews.[14]

CNN-IBN wrote that Selvaraghavan had "succeeded in presenting a sensitive and engaging movie".[16] The Times of India gave 3.5 out of 5, citing: "...with Mayakkam Enna he [Dhanush] proves why he is one of the best actors around".[17] Deccan Chronicle gave 3.5 out of 5 and stated that it had a "fresh appeal and is straight from the heart without any clichd frills".[18] The New Indian Express wrote: "A sensitively crafted screenplay, deft narration, stunning vignettes and montages, and a brilliant performance by the lead pair, makes Mayakkam Enna a fascinating watch".[19] Deccan Herald wrote that it was "entertaining and worth a watch".[20]

NDTV stated it was a film "with soul and worth a watch". In regard to Dhanush's performance, it wrote: "His myriad emotions elevate the movie to a great extent".[21] The review in The Hindu says: "Selvaraghavan knows where his potential lies and has tapped it suitably."[22] Pavithra Srinivasan of Rediff gave the film 3 out of 5 and wrote: "[It] has a brilliant first half but the film looses the steam in the second half".[23] Sify claimed: "Simplistic story with a hard hitting impact, Mayakkam Enna will stay with you".[24] Behindwoods rated 3.5/5 and called it "emotionally rich" and an "inebriating experience by itself".[25] Indiaglitz cited that it does "mesmerize you and you will definitely consider watching this film more than once".[26] Oneindia wrote that it was a "treat for youngsters".[27]

First thing i did coming back home after watching the movie was to open your blog and see if you have written about Mayakkam enna, and i have been checking your blog twice a day to since and finally you have written on the movie.
Thanks for your thoughts on the movie.

Valid point wrt the characters casted as his friends. It is very rare in Tamil cinema that an upper middle class family has a slightly balding darkish looking hero who sports a permanent stubble. It is extremely plausible but hardly ever shown in our movies. I too noticed the same and felt happy that Selvaraghavan gives a thought to such seemingly inconsequential things.

Good points as usual Mr. Brangan. You echoed my thoughts on the heroine. I know she supposed to look somber and frustrated but is there really no other way to convey somber ness? That blank look which Richa spots throughout the movie reminded me of Sonia Agarwal from 7g. Ditto on her TV serial look too. It was too drastic completely opposite to the modern girl which was shown in the first half. Lastly the climax was too cliched for my taste, why does danush has to spot that weird ponny tail wig and the photography award function was handled so amaturely.

actually the moment when is friend see him hug the heroine and his friend slaps and scolds him he nods his moment for two seconds.. the nod that is filled with shame, the feeling of having betrayed your friend.. just unimaginable.. the best..

Mohan: I am not comparing these two films on a rigorous scale and saying this is better or that is better. I am just stating a personal preference. But yes, I agree that bad acting becomes more problematic in this type of film (Rockstar had the same issue).

The scene which gave me goosebumps is that when On seeing Karthik hugging his gf, Sundar slaps Dhaush. And Dhaush accepts that with all the guilt and shame.. It just comes for a second or two but that is the scene which I can vouch for on how great this lanky fellow is turning to be!

And even so, it did not assault my senses that badly since she at least LOOKED the part and she and Ranbir shared a fantastic chemistry that, to some extent, enabled to me to forgive these poor acting bits.

Why this kolaveri, Seethu? Some see glass is half full and some others see the glass as half empty! Nothing wrong with it. While the former lets one enjoy what is available the latter helps in progress.
Btw, I merely mentioned about making things tight. (not changing the story. You are giving a big compliment by comparing me with Selvaraghavan.) And to be a good commentator or coach one need not have played cricket. Both the skills (commentator/player) can develop independently.

Nice!!! ? This interview was at the time of that FICCI launch event or some other?
Well, anyway, hope you have posed some really googlies instead of the dollies you pamper your interview candidates with usually.

Penetrating review. However, not clued in about the caste references in tamil society you been talking about in the blog. Is Selvaraghavan upper caste/lower caste? And how does it inform teh choice of films he has made?

Watched this movie at a theatre since it had a limited re release here in Chennai (I watched it many times btw) and I thought this was one of those really good movies that walked a tightrope on showing a story of a problematic person , yet not glorifying him and his actions.
