Dear Jon

Thank you very much for your enquiry. We are a group of 5 trained cycle trainers working through the charity Recyke y'Bike in Byker, Newcastle ( www.recyke-y-bike.org ). We deliver 3 Levels of training and work at a ratio of 1:6 (max 1:8)

I'm forwarding your email to our cycle training co-ordinator who will suggest some dates when we might come out to Hexham or when you might bring your group to our training area. Phil will be in touch with you shortly.

Kind regards

Dear Dorothy & Ruth,

I have for several years being trying to organise some road awareness & confidence cycling training for my son , now 14, both through school and scouts, without any success. The problem has been finding a suitable ‘instructor’, as there seem to be few in the North East.

Having found you contact details via the CTC website I would like to enquire whether you would be able or interested in providing the leadership for such training in the Hexham area.

I would expect to raise a group of up to 15-20 Scouts and Explorers, and possibly some adults for training. I’m more interested in development of safe road craft and traffic awareness rather than certified qualification, if that helps at all.

Best regards
Jon Greenwood

Jon
We would very much like to help out with your request.

would you be able to give us an idea of the following:
  • dates your group are available (weekends would suit us)
  • numbers in the group
  • age of trainees involved
  • level of cycling ability experience
  • any special needs/disabilities
  • do all trainees own a bike/have access to a bike on the day

  • we would expect all participants to wear a cycle helmet
  • we would recommend that all bikes are checked for road worthiness before the training - we will also do this on the day to teach basic safety checks etc
  • all children participating would require signed parental consent to take part and we would need emergency contact details and next of kin etc.
  • we can train in your local area if there is a school playground or level tarmac car park where participants will not be close to parked or moving cars
  • we can then move on to quiet local streets near your venue but would need to assess any risks/hazards in this area
  • in one day we would probably have time to train to bikeability level 1 and give some idea of the skills needed to reach level 2 on the day this depends on the existing skills of your group and how quickly new skills are picked up
  • check www.bikeability.org.uk for info on the skills
  • we could discuss further training if this was required
we would provide min 4 instructors (2 male 2 female) for 20 trainees and can arrange to come to you or you to us - we would suggest a day initially with times 10.00-12.00 12.30-2.30 3.00-4.00 but flexible to meet your group needs.

If we came to you we would ask for travel expenses, refreshments and a donation to Recyke y bike.
we are all volunteers so would prefer to train on a weekend if this suits your group.

Hope that covers everything so far but please let me know if you need more information.
I look forward to hearing from you soon
Phil

Phil,

Thank you for your very helpful response – I was getting past the tearing my hair out stage with all my other attempts.

I will talk to the with the Scouts again, who I had just about got everything sorted last time but … and get back to you.

All trainees will have their own bikes & helmets etc, I had organized access to Hexham Middle school grounds – for the 'away from the traffic' part and this should be straight forward to rearrange.

As to level of ability, most are over confident on a bike and not 'completely' road aware.

Weekend would be great – getting a weekday organized during term time was virtually impossible!

Very best regards

Jon Greenwood
