Hi Everyone: Jenny is looking for some info on E-cycling.

Jenny: I know that a lot of retailers will take stuff back now, like Best Buy and maybe Staples? Fairfax County contracts with an actual e-cycler/hauler to do our Electric Sundays, where people just drop stuff off, it gets loaded into a truck and driven away—dealt with by this other company.  I don’t, however, know how much it costs. I will try to find out.   My limited understanding is that it is not difficult or expensive, because WE don’t do it—we have someone else do it for us. J

Dear Jen,

Our group, Waste Watchers is on the Eastern Shore and we are trying to learn more about electronic recycling. So far I'm finding it is difficult and expensive to do, but I'm hoping that's just because I don't know enough about it. Can you direct me to some people, websites, resources? I'm wondering how other counties handle this. If you think this is an appropriate question to send out to the whole group, please do.

I understand there will be a very affordable training opportunity offered by SWANA in Henrico County later this month. Might be a great place to start. Frederick County has been doing this for eleven years now. There are a lot more vendors in the marketplace now, in addition to retailers and Goodwill. We pass along any costs (CRTs and TVs) along to the customer and everything else is free. Creative Recycling claims they will charge nothing and provide a rebate for some materials. I do not use them, so you’d need to contact a locality that does.

We use them, but only for the Government items covered in the state contract. They do charge for some things, but it mostly breaks even with the rebate. Their website is http://www.crserecycling.com/
