Hi everyone,

When I talked with folks at the VRA conference about recycling our collected plastic bags through Food Lion, many of you were skeptical. Therefore, I contacted Food Lion for their reassurance about the program and received the following reply. Thought I would share it with everyone.

Mrs. Averett,

Thank you for reaching out to me.  Food Lion does recycle all plastic bags that are collected at the store and also all of the shrink wrap and plastic that comes in with our deliveries.  All stores collect the material and send the plastic back to our Distribution Centers where we have empty trailers from our vendor partner Hilex Poly Inc.  Hilex Poly Inc. uses the plastic that we collect to help make new plastic bags which is called there bag to bag program.

Thank you,

Tim Roux

Subject #1 - Recycling Inquiries

Request/Question - Message: I am the Recycling Coordinator for Amelia County, VA and we have
partnered with the Amelia Food Lion to accept collected plastic bags for
recycling. I just attended the VA Recycling Assoc. annual conference and
lots of folks there were skeptical that Food Lion actually recycles their
collected plastic bags. Could you please provide me with information and
proof about how and where you recycle your collected plastic bags so that I
can debunk these comments? Thanks so much!

Yes, thanks, I did too and I like the gray is the new green stuff although I still think we ought to use something reusable. I believe Food Lion does recycle them; they used to have a contract with Trex, but apparently not any more.
