Ifyou have many Asian movie and TV series downloads on your computer, you must have found those videos are in the extension of .rmvb or .rm. Unlike the popular MP4 videos that you can open on almost any player, RMVB files cannot be opened by Windows Media Player on Windows or QuickTime on Mac.
Vidmore Player is the highly recommended RMVB player software for desktop users. It is compatible with both Windows and Mac computers and you can watch the RMVB or RM movies on the computer directly. This RMVB player supports almost all formats including, RMVB, RM, MP4, MOV, MKV, M4V, AVI, WMV, WebM, MP3, FLAC, WMA, AIFF, and more, and you do not need to worry about the digital media playback.
VLC Media Player is a free media player across platforms. Not only playing RMVB files on Windows, Mac, Linux, etc., but it also opens RMVB videos for iPhone and Android. Compared with the desktop version, this application on iPhone and Android is lacking in some features like DVD ripping, video converting, streaming, etc., but it does play RMVB videos on iPhone and Android.
RealPlayer is a free media player for Windows computers. It can play video, music, and photos with wide range of support of RMVB, RM, MOV, SWF, AVI, M3U, WebM, MKV, WMA, MP3, etc. This free RMVB player has both free and premium versions. In its free version, you can play RMVB and other media files. If you subscribe to it, you can play and burn DVDs, download web videos from YouTube, and remove the ads while playing RMVB videos.
RMVB (RealMedia Variable Bitrate) is a variable bitrate extension of the RealMedia multimedia digital container format developed by RealNetworks. RMVB is typically used for multimedia content stored locally. The file using this format has a file extension, .rmvb. RMVB files are popular for distributing Asian content, especially Chinese television episodes and movies.
Windows Media Player does not support RMVB codec natively. To play RMVB files on Windows Media Player, there are 2 ways. 1. Similar to Media Player Classic, install the RMVB codec to Windows Media Player to open the RMVB videos. 2. Get a RMVB converter to convert RMVB files into Windows Media Player supported WMV, MP4, and other formats.
Both RMVB (RealMedia Variable Bitrate) and RM (RealMedia) are a multimedia container format created by RealNetworks. The stream content over the Internet via RM are in CBR (constant bitrate), and a container for VBR (variable bitrate) is RMVB. Both .rmvb and .rm are the extension of Real media file. There is no difference.
Lack of compatibility like MP4, RMVB may fail to be opened on computer and mobile phone. This page collects the top 4 RMVB player (VLC, Vidmore Player, GOM Player, and RealPlayer), which can open RMVB and RM movies directly without installing the codec. Besides playing RMVB videos, those media players also can play other media files.
RealMedia Variable Bitrate (RMVB) is a variable bitrate extension of the RealMedia multimedia digital container format developed by RealNetworks. As opposed to the more common RealMedia container, which holds streaming media encoded at a constant bitrate (CBR), RMVB is typically used for multimedia content stored locally. Files using this format have the file extension ".rmvb".
RMVB files are popular for distributing Asian content, especially Chinese television episodes and movies.[citation needed] For this reason, they have become noticeably present (though not entirely popular, partly due to their incompatibility with other media players) on file sharing platforms such as BitTorrent, eDonkey and Gnutella.[citation needed]
On the Windows platform, the proprietary RealPlayer SP (RealPlayer 10 and later) and the open-sourced Media Player Classic support RMVB, using an appropriate DirectShow filter or Real Alternative. On Linux and other Unix-like platforms, MPlayer, xine, and Totem are able to play RMVB files using the open-source, reverse-engineered RMVB implementation in FFmpeg. The format is also supported for playback by the cross-platform VLC media player.

I am working on a python program that uses vlc for audio, It runs on a windows system and perform this function (along with others).
I currently have it supporting the following MQTT messages (currently). Would you be willing to test it?
@Sireone (and any other brave souls).
I have created a build for my windows pc based notification app (HApyAudio).
Program is capable of running in the system tray (not really a service so use the windows startup apps)
This is built in Python and all the code is available for review here [be kind ;-)]
RMVB stands for RealMedia Variable Bitrate, and it is essentially a video format developed by RealNetworks. Naturally, it is a proprietary video format owned by RealNetworks and uses the extension .rmvb. While it is based on the RealMedia (.rm) format, it supports a variable bit rate (VBR) compared to the constant bit rate (CBR) used in the .rm format.
The variable bit rate allows for a better quality result along with smaller file size when it comes to locally stored media. The RMVB file format is not that popular, mainly due to its incompatibility with a lot of video players. However, it is widely used as a format for distributing Asian content such as movies, TV, and anime.
Using data recovery software is by far the most user-friendly method of recovering a deleted RMVB file. If you accidentally deleted the files permanently, this is the way to go. There are plenty of data recovery programs available.
The RMVB video format is a proprietary format. Thus, it may not work on as many media players as the MP4 format. However, there are still plenty of options available for both Windows and macOS users to play .rmvb videos.
Ideally, since the format was developed by RealNetworks, it plays well on the RealPlayer media player. Users can also download the Real Alternative codec pack to play RMVB files without having to download RealPlayer.
