Job Description
- 5+ years of UX research and product design experience
- Strong Figma skills including interactive, high-fidelity prototypes
- Direct experience conducting user research independently: planning, interviewing, synthesizing, and designing from findings
- Experience designing for technical users such as engineers, data practitioners, or platform teams
- Comfortable working in ambiguity on a new product with evolving requirements
- Strong communication skills across both design and engineering audiences
User Research
- Plan and conduct user interviews across three distinct personas: engineers, data product managers, and data analysts and scientists
- Map current workflows, pain points, and unmet needs across each persona
- Synthesize findings into clear design direction and share insights with the PM and engineering team
UX and Product Design
- Translate research into user journeys, information architecture, wireframes, and high-fidelity Figma prototypes
- Design two primary product surfaces: the pre-merge developer experience (code change impact visibility) and the lineage review and approval flow (for data product managers and data consumers)
- Build interactive prototypes for user testing and engineering handoff
- Iterate quickly based on feedback from users, PM, and engineering
- Maintain design documentation so the team can build from your work consistently
Collaboration
- Work day-to-day with the Product Manager and engineering tech lead
- Participate in sprint planning and design reviews
- Align design decisions with technical constraints and delivery timelines
Preferred
- Experience with data products, developer tooling, or enterprise platform design
- Familiarity with data lineage, observability, or similar data infrastructure concepts
- Prior work on approval workflows, notification systems, or graph-based visualizations

About the Role
Capital One's Card Data team is building an end-to-end data lineage solution
from the ground up. This is a greenfield product with real users across
engineering, data, and analytics, with a clear delivery timeline. We are
looking for a senior contractor designer who can own the full design process:
from original user research to high-quality UI and interactive prototypes ready
for engineering.
This role sits at the intersection of data infrastructure and user experience.
The right person will be curious about how data moves through complex systems,
comfortable talking to highly technical users, and skilled at turning what they
learn into clean, intuitive experiences.
