Job Title: Principal Database Administrator (SQL Server)

Contract- 6-months to start

Location: 100% REMOTE

 

 

Position Overview:

The Principal Database Administrator will serve as the senior technical expert and leader for the administration, performance, and security of the SQL Server environments. This role focuses on ensuring high availability, reliability, and optimal performance of production databases. The Principal DBA will lead by example, lead the DBA team, drive best practices for database management and operations, and be responsible for the SQL Server platform roadmap.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, implementation, and ongoing support of secure, high-performance, and highly available SQL Server database environments.
  • Provide direction, mentorship, and oversight to the DBA team, ensuring best practices in database administration.
  • Architect, implement, and optimize SQL Server databases to meet the performance and reliability needs of the business.
  • SQL Expertise: Develop, optimize, and troubleshoot complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and indexing strategies to enhance database performance.
  • Automation & Scripting: Utilize scripting languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell) to automate database processes and deployments.
  • Lead efforts to optimize database performance, including query tuning, indexing strategies, and resource allocation.
  • Design and implement high-availability solutions, replication strategies, and disaster recovery plans for critical databases.
  • Optimize Performance: Tune the CDC process for optimal performance, minimizing resource usage and ensuring data integrity throughout the pipeline.
  • Documentation & Best Practices: Create detailed technical documentation on our current architecture and data flow processes. Established and enforces best practices related to our overall replication architecture.
  • Ensure database security, access control, and compliance with industry standards and company policies.
  • Troubleshooting & Support: Quickly identify and resolve any technical issues in our production and non-production environments.
  • Establish and maintain database documentation, policies, and best practices for database administration.
  • Collaboration with Stakeholders: Work closely with developers, data engineers, and business teams to align database solutions with organizational goals.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of hands-on experience in SQL Server database administration in complex production environments.
  • 5+ years in a leadership role, mentoring and leading other DBAs or database operations teams.
  • Proven track record of leading critical database operations and supporting mission-critical systems.
  • Advanced degree or certifications (MCSE: Data Management & Analytics, AWS/Azure Database Certifications) are a plus
  • Knowledge of Snowflake administration, including data modeling, security, and workload management.
  • Knowledge of Terraform, Ansible, or Infrastructure as Code (IaC).

Skills:

  • Expert-level experience with Microsoft SQL Server, including performance tuning, query optimization, and resource management.
  • Strong understanding of SQL Server high-availability and disaster recovery solutions (Always On, replication, mirroring, etc.).
  • Experience with database automation and scripting (PowerShell, T-SQL).
  • Experience in healthcare or insurance-related data systems, especially with Cognizant TriZetto Facets, is a strong advantage.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a proactive mindset.
