Job Title: Lead UX Designer
Location: Wilmington, DE/Washington, DC
Duration: 12+ Months

Responsibilities & Summary:
25% Travel required. Must be local to Northeast Corridor, specifically near Wilmington, DE, NYC, D.C., or Philadelphia. Train travel is required to support local workshops and engage with employees on premise and/or on trains. The opportunity also requires in-person participation for PI Planning activities that happen quarterly, 2-3 days in/near our Northeast Corridor. Work hours: M-F 9-5.

As a Lead UX Designer on an agile team, you will play a crucial role in leading a team to design intuitive, user-centered custom applications that empower our operations staff to keep trains running smoothly and on time. You will collaborate closely with product owners, researchers, developers, engineers, and product managers, to create digital experiences and refine components that contribute to a design system, ensuring consistency and scalability across all our digital products.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design Excellence: Oversee the entire design process, creating high-quality and interactive Figma designs that are user-friendly, accessible, and consistent with our design guidelines.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including product owners, researchers, developers, engineers, product managers, and stakeholders, to gather requirements, understand user needs, and deliver visually comprehensive ready-to-develop solutions that drive business outcomes.   • User-Centered Design: Help conduct usability and accessibility testing to inform design decisions. Incorporate feedback and iterate on designs to enhance the user experience.
  • Agile Methodology: Participate in agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives. Ensure design tasks are aligned with the project timeline and goals. Consistently communicate with the product owner on design processing and decisions, and lead PI Planning design activities.
  • Documentation: Create detailed design principles and specifications to facilitate smooth development & QA. Collaborate with engineers to ensure that designs are implemented accurately.
  • Design Systems: Help develop our design system by creating new components and patterns that can be used across different products. Make sure design elements are consistent, reusable, and scalable.
Basic Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in UX design, with a strong portfolio showcasing user-centered high-fidelity designs for complex applications.
  • Must have a strong, confident voice to advocate for and defend design decisions and processes.
  • Must have experience working with and designing components and templates within a design system to create consistency and reusability across products.
  • Must have expertise working in agile environments and following agile methodologies.
  • Proficiency in tools such as Jira, Figma, Figjam, confluence, and prototyping.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to present and advocate for design decisions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with rail industry or complex operations and backend systems.
  • Experience designing processes, software, or applications for internal audiences in enterprise organizations.
  • Familiarity with the usability testing process and tools such as: dScout, Maze, UserTesting, or UserZoom
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards and best practices for inclusive design.
