Libertadores is a symphonic poem composed by Oscar Navarro, a Spanish musician and conductor. It was commissioned by the Banda Sinfónica Municipal de Madrid in 2010 to celebrate the bicentennial of the independence of several Latin American countries. The work is dedicated to the memory of the heroes who fought for freedom and democracy in the continent, such as Simón Bolívar, José de San Martín, Bernardo O'Higgins, José Artigas, and others.
The work consists of four movements, each representing a different aspect of the history and culture of Latin America. The first movement, El Grito de Libertad (The Cry of Freedom), depicts the uprising of the people against the colonial oppression. The second movement, La Esperanza (The Hope), expresses the optimism and courage of the revolutionaries. The third movement, El Dolor (The Pain), reflects the suffering and sacrifice of the martyrs. The fourth and final movement, La Gloria (The Glory), celebrates the triumph and joy of independence.
The work is scored for a large symphonic band, with a variety of percussion instruments and ethnic instruments such as charango, quena, zampoña, cuatro, and maracas. The music is influenced by various musical genres from Latin America, such as salsa, merengue, cumbia, tango, and bolero. The composer also incorporates some folk melodies and national anthems from different countries.
Libertadores is a masterpiece of contemporary band music, with a powerful message of freedom and solidarity. It has been performed by many bands around the world, and has received several awards and recognitions. The composer has also arranged the work for symphony orchestra and wind ensemble.
