The program works if you work it, but you have to work it. Simply
going to meetings and avoiding booze isn't enough to truly appreciate
recovery, although it may keep you sober. I "plugged the jug" and was
blessed with the gift of desperation when I came in (career loss, no
self-respect, and hating life) .. I got involved in the Fellowship and
began to love life. Today I have the same desire to carry the
principles into all my affairs, live in the solution, and welcome God
and A.A. into my consciousness all day long. Being sober is great -
understanding the steps and changed way of thinking is awesome. I ask
God for help each day, keep tabs on my own moral inventory, honestly
acknowledge bad behaviors and make amends when necessary, and then
pass the message along to the next guy because in order to keep it I
have to give it away.
I dropped the car off for repairs today and plan to get a haircut
tomorrow, and discussed the mutual stresses of life with my wife last
night. We both know there is a lot going on, but together we will
focus on one challenge at a time and enjoy the trudge to happy destiny
(as mentioned in the Big Book) together. There is nothing so
overwhelming that will lead me to a drink; as long as I work my
program and share with my sponsor and sober friends honestly when I
feel like I need help.
Anyway, lots of work to do at the job today - for which I'm grateful.
Time for a cup of coffee, a Serenity Prayer, some music, and maybe
allow some time to respond to some other posts on my sober groups
today!
