The computer we are using has:
nvidia geforce 7300 LE
ACPI x86-based PC
AMD Athlon(tm)64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3600+

Microsoft Kinect for XBox

We updated the nvidia driver, installed the runtime, installed the OpenNI driver package, restarted system, plugged in the kinect sensor and the system detected it and installed the driver, downloaded and installed the ReconstructMe package.

When I open Start ReconstructMe Scan OpenNI, a window console opens up, but when I click 'y', it just closes. Checking the log I get this message:

[2012/07/09 08:34:27.728400][error  ] THROWING EXCEPTION: Throw in
function (unknown)
Dynamic exception type: class LibFundament::robvis_error
std::exception::what: No OpenCL compatible device found
[struct LibFundament::tag_robvis_condition *] = !devs.empty()
[struct LibFundament::tag_robvis_message *] = No OpenCL compatible device found

I get the same error when I try to use the Start ReconstructMe Scan Highres OpenNI, Start ReconstructMe Scan Highres MSKinect, and Start ReconstructMe Scan MSKinect. I tried the MSKinect versions just to see if there would be a difference, eventhough I have the XBox version and downloaded the OpenNI package (just trying to cover all my bases.) It would appear that the computer is not recognizing the Kinect device.

However, if I click on Start ReconstructMe Record OpenNI, a window console opens up and after I click 'y', a GUI window opens up and I can see the sensor image on the monitor screen, and if I move the sensor, it will show the changing image. So it appears that the computer can recognize the Kinect device when it is in this mode. I clicked 'p' and scanned around an object. When I clicked esc, the GUI window closed and the window console didn't give me a chance to save or name the file, it just went to 'click any button to continue'. When the window console closed, there was a reconstructme video clip in ReconstructMe directory. When I clicked on that, it played a video of the image I just recorded, but it didn't give me a chance to save it as a specific file type or anything.
When I try to use the Start ReconstructMe Replay, I get the same error code as with the 'Scan' options.

Does anyone have any ideas of why it won't recognize my sensor in the scan modes, but it will in the record mode?

Thanks in advance for any advice on this issue.

Update, I also tried to plug the Kinect sensor into the different USB ports, same results.

I'm no expert, I would guess that your graphics card isn't compatible. (At least this is the error I got when I tried doing this with an incompatible card.)

See the Device Compatibility Matrix here.

Thanks for the reply. I was kind of wondering that myself. I did check the device compatibility matrix, but didn't see the nvidia geforce 7300 LE listed. From how I'm reading the page, this doesn't mean that it is compatible or not, just that no one has reported with this particular one yet. So it could be the card, don't know for sure. I also tried doing the same setup on my laptop:
Pentium Dual CPU T3200
32 bit operating system

When I tried opening the Start ReconstructMe Scan OpenNI, I got a error message saying:
This application has failed to start because OpenCL.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

I will try and uninstall ReconstructMe and re-install it now, just wanted to give an update on the process.

Well, the OpenCL message could also appear because you don't have the latest drivers installed. Make sure you've downloaded and installed the latest drivers for your card from Nvidia's website.

Jay64: it's useful to post the whole log, then we can see what version of the Nvidia drivers you have installed, and where the error is cropping up.
However, regarding your graphics card, a useful link for OpenCL compatibility with Nvidia drivers is http://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-gpus
From this, it looks like OpenCL compatibility is only available with Nvidia cards after the 8000 series. I would guess that's your main problem! You may be able to get it working with the CPU, using the AMD OpenCL CPU drivers http://developer.amd.com/zones/OpenCLZone/Pages/default.aspx but it will be mightily slow, assuming the CPU is supported.

Ok, so we went out and bought a new graphics card. Nividia  Feforce GTX 550 Ti. Man, that thing was a bitch to install. It didn't fit in the desktop available space. and it needed a different power supply plug than was available. But after a lot of modifications we got it to fit. The program started up, first try with the new graphics card. The first time we tried a scan, it didn't catch anything at all. The second scan attempt caught a slight bit of something. Third scan I could see my leg pretty clearly, but when I moved the sensor, it disappeared and I could only see the carpet. Then we scanned the coffee table and all the objects on it, and it was pretty decent, but could probably get better. It seems like it gets better with each scan.

What do you guys recommend to veiw the finished scan with?

Jay could you paste the most current log in the logs directory? Are you sure ReMe used your graphics card?

Ok, sorry about the totally noob question, and I'll probably feel like an idiot when I hear the answer. But the Usage instructions keep referring to using different commands, which look like DOS commands. When I tried to use them in cmd, the wouldn't work. maybe I was using them wrong, or at the wrong time?

And we haven't really been able to find a program that will read the .obj file format. We need to know where to go from here once we got our first scan. How do we clean up the image? The surface texture is pretty rough. If we could get a smooth surface or possibly even a wire framework type result that would be a huge step in the right direction.

The commands it refers to are .bat files. These are in the Reconstructme/bin folder, and you should be able to double click on these to get reconstructme to run with default settings. No need to mess around with the command line. Make sure you use the correct one for your hardware. Depending on your file permissions, it won't be able to save output if you have put the reconstructme folder in your Program Files folder; put it in your Documents folder.

Have a look at the .bat files in Notepad to see what they are doing. To do custom scanning, edit and save them to make your own settings.

Cleaning up meshes is a whole project in it's own right. However, to get you going, Meshlab http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/ is open source and reads/edits STL and OBJ files.

Not sure what the problem is with your graphics card; it should work fine. Maybe uninstall the nvidia driver, download a fresh version for that specific card, and reinstall?

I just downloaded meshlab from that website when I tried to open a file, the only extensions that it will look for are .mlp and .aln. It can't find any of my .obj or .stl files.

Ok, we have gotten a couple pretty decent scans, but we keep getting a LOT of background images in them. We have a car model on the coffee table that we raise up a few inces from the table with some cans underneath. The coffee table and the carpet under the table are being scanned. We can't find any software that lets us separate the model that we want scanned from the background 'noise'. Any ideas. And I can't find the --calibrate anywhere.

Ok, nevermind. I just figured out that if I import instead of open in meshlab it can bring in the .stl file.

Yes, you'll need to import models into Meshlab. You can do some cleaning in Meshlab, but it's not the best tool for editing meshes. There are lots of good (and bad) mesh editors, you'll just have to experiment depending on what your goal is. Mine is 3D printing, so having a 'watertight' object is my goal. For this, I use Meshlab, Rhino (the Mac version is currently in beta and free to download, Windows version is pretty expensive), Netfabb Basic. Have a look at this video by Tony Buser which shows one way of fixing meshes for printing: http://vimeo.com/38764290

Ian, thank you for your responses. Yes, I did read through the usage guide, several times in fact. Re-looking at it again, the first image shows the address bar: ReconstructMe>Bin. But when I open the ReconstructMe folder, it doesn't say bin in the address bar, so I was looking around for a bin folder. I think maybe this version just doesn't call it that. But anyways.
In my ReconstructMe directory folder, I don't see any of those command files, or any .bat files. All I have are a bunch of .dll files, the 7 start files (2 record, 1 replay, and 4 scan), the uninstall, and all my scan files. Maybe my download missed something?

The idea of this software has a LOT of potential usage and I have quite a few ideas running around in my head. But the two immediate usages that we are looking forward to using this with are for setting up 3D printing and for 3D modeling. We are looking to scan, resize, reshape car body covers for Remote Control cars and then be able to 3D print them. We are currently building them by hand, we have to make a modification with cutting and glueing, then make a new mold on the modification, then pour a new piece. Being able to use this software will allow us to make faster modifications to do more testing to find a ultimate body shape.
We also are building electric motorcycles. We are looking to make some advances in this field with re-positioning different parts in different areas. But again, for us to cut the mounting plates, and mount up all the parts, and then need to make another change, which requires more cutting and mounting, it takes a lot of time and costly materials. So we would like to be able to create a model of the components (frame, motor, controller, etc) and be able to move them around in relation to each other with some 3d software to eliminate this.
So I guess for our first usage, we would need it "watertight". Not so much for the second usage. But, if I'm going to learn how to make it watertight, I would probably want to make the modeling watertight as well, no sense have a half ass job if I have the capabilities of doing it right. I'm also looking to share the models of the different frames, motors etc with others so they can have an easier time building electric vehicles as well.

That video you posted has been SUPER helpful. I actually stopped it at 3:35 to try what he just showed and that solved our first major hurtle that we were having! So stoked right now. Thanks man. I just wanted to get back to you about your responses and then get back to the video. Hopefully my flailing through this might help some other noob. Ha ha.
