i bought a kinect 360 last week so i can start checking out this nice
3d scanning, and so far ime amazed of the speed and all
very nice
but ofcause like most wonder, how can we aprove quality

and beeing new on the topic i got a few questions
and i hope someone would use alittle time to reply

1) i understand there is an IR beam thingy and two cameras on the kinect.
a normal camera and the camera that reads the IR
is it wrongly understood that as it is now, it only uses
the iR beam and IR cam to do the 3d scans and not the color camera?

2) Does the level of light in a room affect the quality of the scanning
when its not scanning textures, just the 3d part ?

3) If i set the volume_size wich controls the resolution to say 256 256 256
does the volume_min and volume_max have an effect on the quality ?
Say would 256 256 256 with a 2 meter volume box be a lower quality scan
then if it was 256 256 256 and use 1 meter box or 50 cm box ?
would that resolt in a better quality scan with more details ?

4) if i am to test the lens test +2.5, do i need to cover IR lens and IR beam
or do i need a lens for the webcam also, even if it doesnt use that
for the acual scan as it is now (if that is the case as question 1)?

5) i think i saw someware that the volume_size had do be in the line of like
2 4 8 16 32 64 128 256 512 1024 and cannot be inbetween
Is that correct ? cause i have been doing some scans with 400 600 400
and they defently look more detailed then the 256 256 256 ?
can anyone give some guidence on this or does the number just
need to be dividable by two and thats it ?

Hope someone will take some time to help me with my questions

Best regards
Mis

1) i understand there is an IR beam thingy and two cameras on  the kinect.
a normal camera and the camera that reads the IR
is it wrongly understood that as it is now, it only uses
the iR beam and IR cam to do the 3d scans  and not the color camera?

Yes - color camera is not used

2) Does the level of light in a room affect the quality of the scanning
when its not scanning textures, just the 3d part ?

Yes - you need adequate - even lighting.

3) If i set the volume_size wich controls  the resolution to say 256 256 256
does the volume_min and volume_max have an effect on the quality ?
Say would 256 256 256 with a 2 meter volume box be a lower quality scan
then if it was 256 256 256 and use 1 meter box or 50 cm box ?

would that result in a better quality scan with more details ?

think of these as two different aspects. Dimensions define the actual measured volume. E.g. 1m square. Vs the resolution of 512 (say) samples within that volume. so 512 samples in a small volume is higher res than the same number of samples in a larger volums.

4) if i am to test the lens test +2.5, do i need to cover IR lens and IR beam
or do i need a lens for the webcam also, even if it doesnt use that
for the acual scan as it is now (if that is the case as question 1)?

Yes Beam and camera both need lenses. Else Beam is only partially cobvering area in camera resulting in loss of detail. Not required on color camera as not used.

Volume - any size but be aware 400mm minium dist without lenses.
Resolution - as above defined in powers of two. 512 is more samples that 256.
