Why are we replacing the Leap when it hasn't even been released yet? Did we find out that the Leap dev kits don't play nice with ReMe? I'm going to cancel my preorder if that's the case.

I got an email reply from someone that said this:
--------------
Both the Leap and the Duo3D are NOT true 3D cameras.
They can track hands and fingers, in very specific conditions -
camera sitting on table, looking up , against a uniform and non moving background - the ceiling.
This is not 3D, this is a simpler task.

I don't think the Leap will ever be used for 3D scanning.
------------

Christoph, when the Leap was first announced, you had hoped to get a dev kit thinking that it could be used with ReconstructMe. Did you ever get that kit? Do you not think that this will ever be used for 3d scanning?

We do have a LEAP device since 2 months. Our use case was clearly 3D scanning but the API does not (yet) expose 3d data.

So we can expect it to expose this date in the future, say with official shipments and SDK releasing?

Actually we don't get a clear answer on that. It seems like they made an unofficial statement that it will be part of the SDK, but the latest development actions don't point in that direction (rather gestures and such).

Anyways is it really cool to use it, or it's rather hard to get familiar with it? Ordered two devices just when you said on the blog that you were selected for dev program :)

Leap motion's response to my question if they are going to release a version that exposes 3d data

we use a different mathematical model than a 3D point cloud, which is why it is not available to developers. We may, however, in the future provide similar information for you to use.

So it could be possibly many months before they will be able to bring it to us.
It's not good :(

Indeed, especially when considering other systems. I bought a structured light system to complete high resolution scans knowing that the technology will become available for sub micron accuracy at some point, but I don't have time to wait, so whenever it becomes available, I will most certainly make an investment with reconstructme.

I think they wil be more amenable to exposing what we need for 3D reconstruction. Even if its only a depth map.

They are at 1/3 of way there. 24 days to go...

Depthmap is all we would need for ReconstructMe to work :)
