Hello gents... it's Team 8, Boyd and Jamie, checking in with Playtest HQ. Other theatres of war have kept us distracted, so our pace has been a little slower than average. Shots have been fired, but most of the action so far has consisted of birds tweeting in the trees as the Americans sneak through the wheat, while the German squads peek through the windows of the objective buildings, cocking their rifles and MGs and aiming them nervously this way and that. Things are about to get hot, though.

As the Americans, I planted the trees in S5 and W9 and deployed in platoons stacked along the hedge, with the two better leaders on the southern flank; nothing fancy here. Boyd's Germans likewise responded with what I interpreted as a conservative setup (I defer to Boyd here if he'd like to share some thoughts)... a squad and LMG in the shack at T9, two squads in L6 with the 7-0 in the wheatfield to their rear, and gun barrels poking from every orifice of the O4 building where everybody else is holed up and waiting.

There was a brisk exchange of fire with the LMG squad in T9 when I made contact with it, which double broke him as I recall; his DF broke one of my squads, who promptly routed into the arms of the adjacent 9-1 who shook them by their collars and whipped them right back into shape, so I got lucky there. I captured the building and the LMG, and advanced the entire line west through the grain.

It's now the start of the German DF Phase of Turn 3 and the situation is as shown in the attached image, with US movement displayed. Again, nothing fancy here, just following the old Squad Leader commandment: when thou breaketh cover, do it everywhere at once. And, of course, try not to give the other guy easy choices about what to shoot at (whether I've done that here is open to question!). One of my 847s has popped smoke in P2 to add to the fun. My MMG is with the 9-1 in L8, as I have a mind to hopefully being in a position to interdict Boyd's reinforcements who are about to crash the party.

Comments welcome.

Thanks -
Jamie

Just a note on victory conditions, the way that Mike J. and I have understood them in our match. Others chime in if we are wrong.

The Americans either need to DC the buildings or leave an unbroken squad in each building left standing (with a total of at least 4 unbroken squads) in order to claim victory. Simply being last owner of the building (e.g. T9) is insufficient to count toward victory conditions right?

I would also like to state that there are entirely too many good order units left in your game. Is everyone saving ammunition for some after match party I don't know about? My entire initial german force, and half of Mike J.'s American force in our match are gone, whereas here it looks like maybe 2 units at best are in the graveyard with full reinforcements set to arrive. It looks like things are about to get tight for the Americans, but the good news for them is that most of them are still around.

Hi Mike... thanks for sharing a few thoughts. You're correct on the VC; the US player needs to garrison or destroy the objective buildings. I had overlooked that, but in hindsight felt that I needed max firepower up front for the midgame and can hustle a squad back to occupy T9 when necessary.

And yes, there are indeed a lot of cardboard troops still in action. In fact, there's only been one casualty overall: the German squad that set up with an LMG in T9. As mentioned above, I thought Boyd deployed his Germans fairly conservatively, setting up in the objective buildings exactly as you see in the map image I posted. All movement in the game so far has been mine as the US force has crept forward out of LOS, but we're now in a position to start blasting away at each other in earnest. The next map image is probably going to look a lot less populous...

Just checking in... I understand the target completion date for the playtest came and went last Saturday, and traffic has dropped to zero in the forum, but is anyone else still wrapping up? Are there plans to share a final analysis or overview of some kind? Boyd and I are still blasting away and I intend to complete the evaluation Q&A when we're done. Without giving too much away at the moment, I'll likely post a map image when the current turn is finished and share some thoughts.
