to Reclaim our Beaches
Hi all,

I think its time we discuss how we can take the seminar forward! Iv been circulating the draft concept note and seminar structure and talking points around. After incorporating all the comments and feedback this is what I have (see bottom).

I was hoping to discuss the following points at the meeting-

- finding experts
- looking at how ROBBers can participate (maybe take on the case studies?)
- finding a partner college
- discussing our outreach goals and strategy
- your discussion point here...

I think if we can pull this off it would be amazing for ROB! Please confirm your participation by responding to this email. Also from now on let this be the space to talk about the concept note and seminar structure.

ROB Symposium part 2: Talking Trash and Exposing Waste

It is impossible to think about Chennai without thinking about its beautiful beaches. These days however, it is impossible to think about Chennai’s beaches without thinking about how dirty and polluted they are.

So, why is our coastline so dirty? Moreover, what can we as citizens do about it? Answering these two questions has been an important agenda of ours, ever since we began working almost three years ago.

In this time we have learnt much. We now understand how beach cleanups aren’t real solutions because all they do is transport trash from one place to another (from the beach to Pallikaranai or Kodungaiyur, Chennai’s primary dump-yards). We have realized how litter on the beach is only a small part of the problem as most trash is found within the ocean, which washes up every time it rains. Most importantly though, we have begun to understand how waste is perhaps the biggest symptom of a much larger issue, one that involves our materials economy, and is driven by what we consume and how we behave as consumers.

We cannot begin to find solutions to waste, unless we understand the nature of this beast. This is exactly what we will try to accomplish in our 2nd symposium, which will feature a diverse group of experts whose goal will be to ‘expose’ waste for all that it is, and place it in it’s larger context. Through such an engagement, we hope to deepen our understanding of waste to make sure that the solutions we find and support can be truly ecologically sustainable and equitable amongst all classes of people.

We invite you to join us in this discovery.

Seminar Structure and talking points:

1. Capitalism, Consumerism and Waste

Value and waste: Understanding resource use and material value in the 21st century

Case study on the making of meaning: deconstructing modern advertising and marketing strategies in the health sector (this could be anything- I thought health is really interesting space to look at though).

Understanding impacts: the effects of 21st century waste on human health and the environment

The politics of waste: Understanding waste’s spatial and social prejudices.

Case study: The environmental and social impacts of Chennai’s 2 primary dumpyards.

2. Governance responses to waste

Important moments in the governance of waste: understanding different legal and institutional frameworks that have emerged around the world.

Where do we stand? comparing Chennai’s waste management practices to the rest of the world.

3. Citizen responses to waste

Tracing civic action that has improved the governance of waste: analyzing the impact of the environmental and social justice movements in different countries on waste governance.

Mapping different civic action around waste in Chennai: analyzing the value of different movements and their effectiveness in improving the governance of waste.

4. Moving forward: unconference style discussions
