Fair and lovely - empowering women? My foot. Pardon my language. As angry as you Hande. We should speak out against it. High time - against fair and lovely itself. They will argue that they are only reflecting the society's "aspirations". They are but creating rather have already well established this notion of how a woman can get "empowered" - by changing her complexion (which actually can't even be changed). Argh.

One of the sickest products I've come across and ironically, the only place I've heard of a F&L ad being banned, is in Maharashtra.

It's not like India doesn't have discrimination-based-on-colour even today.

For hundreds of women the arranged match system is cruel enough without the added 'guilt' loaded onto them for their skin colour. Products like F&L are instruments of torture by a) throwing it in their face that it's only the 'fair' women who get jobs/get married/pass exams whatever other hogwash they come up with b) Tempting them with a product and promising them something that, like Janani says, isn't even really possible.
