BACKGROUND
Unsponsored by Chennai Corporation, CMDA and TNPCB, 'Poda Poromboke' is Justice Rocks' way of sticking an irreverent, satirical, musical, comical finger at the degradation of the word 'Poromboke' in public discourse and engaging with the issues of the degradation of our waterbodies, grazing grounds and our general environment.
The word 'Poromboke' which has now come to mean wasteland originated in the Chola Period. Meaning 'space that falls outside taxation', the different kinds of Poromboke (grazing land, river beds, lake beds, the seaside, burial grounds etc) were reserved for common use - belonging to the State and not meant to be privatised. Over the span of a few decades we've seen the word take on a negative connotation as the Poromboke themselves have been encroached upon. These spaces need to preserved and used only for what they were originally meant as they provide safety nets and protect people in times of natural calamities. The December 2015 flooding of Chennai is a classic example of what would result if we lose our Purampokku's to development.
Justice Rocks is a copy-left initiative where youngsters to use satire, music and the performing arts to challenge corporate globalisation, discrimination and hate politics. Justice Rocks is an "Unsponsored" event. Unlike sponsored events where organisers are expected to pay glowing tributes to undeserving sponsors, at Justice Rocks we make fun of our deserving unsponsors.
Past editions of Justice Rocks include:
"Don't Work for Dirty Dow" concert unsponsored by Union Carbide and Dow Chemical;
"Lever Fever" on Kodaikanal's mercury pollution unsponsored by Unilever;
"Chillout" on climate change unsponsored by the fossil fuel industry;
"Unclear Energy" on nuclear power unsponsored by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Government of India and Dinamalar;
"Culture Unplugged" on the rise of cultural fundamentalism by culture bullies and the moral police of the world;
"Leaky Bucket" unsponsored by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to spotlight the state's wasteful and leaky electricity infrastructure.
"Unmaking India" unsponsored by Unilever and Government of India.
Justice Rocks is a crowd-funded, crowd-organised, corporate-critical event that uses entertainment to inject some healthy confusion from the margins as a cure for the deadly clarity of the mainstream.
